I have been working at Motorola Solutions (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Highly flexible schedule, good people to work with, autonomy when making decisions

    Cons

Company seems to be getting ready to sell, downsizing its R&D. Too fixed on radio solutions and not enough emphasis on software.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Weed out the higher ups who don't do anything. Bring incentives for software engineering which is going to be the heart of your company.

I have been working at Motorola Solutions (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Motorola Solutions pays well. Most people I know have good work-life balance because they can "work" from home, come and go as they please, and hide most of the time. There are some amazingly good people in engineering and the field who themselves are only maybe 20% of the workforce, but do 90% of the work.

    Cons

Layoffs every 6 months. The 80% who don't contribute (see above for the good ones) spend all their time in office politics to avoid getting laid-off. The leadership has no strategy or plan for the future because they don't know what we do now or why we are successful. There is this feeling of doom in the air and we have like 80% market share - it is the oddest thing. You can tell leadership gets this feedback constantly because in townhalls they tell us they are tired of hearing it and that it is the employees faults that they don't have a strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The "strategy" you lay out - the 3 circles- could be applied to any company and therefore is not a strategy. The gas station on the corner focuses on their "core" (selling gas) while they try to expand into "adjacencies" (selling overpriced junkfood) and try to "innovate the future" (putting up TV's and selling me carwashes). Did you pay Bain $20M for those stupid circles or come up with that yourself? At least don't be indignant when people ask for more detail.

I have been working at Motorola Solutions full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company pays what I'd expect on average and has average health benefits.
The employee stock purchase plan is typical for the type and is a great tool.
The company offers pretty good work-life balance. I have the opportunity to telecommute as necessary.
The people are enjoyable to work with overall. However, between groups there can be a lot of politics and in fighting.

    Cons

There are too many silos. That was the way of the old company and must go away.
The work is not very challenging.
There are not many opportunities for promotion or advancement.
The software development is behind the times as far as technology and methodology goes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Breakdown the walls and inspire the employees.
Get out of the hardware mindset
Bring in some fresh minds and fresh perspectives.

    Pros

Good products came from this company. A lot of innovation in mobility products

    Cons

The sales offices are often very autocratic. That leaves the feeling of corporate offices being too far away and the local "captain" of the office is the only authority figure. This does not promote the company vision.
