I worked at Murphy Oil as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, opportunities are good long term and has a small company feel for a bigger company. Nice new office in Houston

    Cons

Lack of feedback and poor work life balance. As an intern it was not bad, but the Full time engineers spent plenty of weekends in the field with no overtime.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More feedback to interns and new engineers, and make sure they have the tools to succeed, or at least know where to find them.

I worked at Murphy Oil full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I thoroughly enjoyed the advancement opportunities. Also, the ability to travel among the district and give assistance to fellow team members.

    Cons

No work-life balance at all. No growth potential beyond store manager unless you have a super supportive District Manager who doesn't feel threaten by you and your skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider promoting those who you use so frequently. Offer better incentives for managers who consistently show improvement. Also, allow managers more time off to spend with families. Hold the ASM's accountable for the business to prepare them for next level leadership.

Good company with a lot of good intentions but incompetent and overzealous leaders never let it come to fruition.

    Pros

Good competitive environment and good pay and compensation.

    Cons

A few overzealous leaders get in the way of good development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promotion from within supposed to be a good thing but some of the managers promoted to district managers makes life so difficult for the store managers, cursing at them at will and treating them with utmost disrespect, also threathening them with their job. Some real nice people in higher management that you can reach out to but who wants to do that all the time because of an incompetent supervisor .

I worked at Murphy Oil full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, fun atmosphere, alot of great co workers.

    Cons

No work/life balance. Drastic cut of cashiers hours so a bigger turnover rate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Toss The Good Ole Boy Network, Hire D.M's and RGM's that "don't" set the tone of what "not" to do, (lie, manipulate, show extreme favoritism for those that brown nose.

    Pros

Excellent salary, good benefits, you live very close to work, no travel time.

    Cons

El Dorado, AR (Corporate Headquarters), small town thinking, women don't really count there. They talk the talk but don't walk the walk.

I worked at Murphy Oil full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Full-time benefits are good with vacation and medical/optical/dental insurance offered as well as profit sharing/stock options and/or 401k. There are some very excellent people to work with.

    Cons

There are different rules for different people. The expectations vary on where you work and who you work for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get everyone on the same page. Do not allow District/Zone/Regional managers to have different rules for different people.

I have been working at Murphy Oil full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

All in all its a great place to be. Great people, freedom within job, laid back culture.

    Cons

Cronyism is the name of the game here. If you don't have the right friends you are stuck. But if you get picked to be one of the in crowd you are set. If you just blend in here thats all you'll ever do. Pay is wildly disparate with sometimes those without college degrees making triple digits, well over better educated people. Career advancement is tough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent. Stop installing all of your yes men to serve your own needs. Stop hiring yes men or promoting them into management. Trust your subordinates to manager their teams and stop dictating hiring decisions.
