Great for many years, sliding now, hopefully great again soon

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at NIC full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat coworkers. Get in & get the job done type of people for the most part.

ConsManagement is being brought in without having first gone through the trenches which means they have no idea what the people doing the work are actually doing or having to deal with day to day. The original idea of the company was promotion from within you start at the bottom & work up, that is no longer an option, the career paths are no longer used. The national conferences are only for management personnel now, the grunts are no longer needed to go & learn new things or present new ideas to the whole company, which takes away from where this company began - 2 guys in a basement working their butts off to make it great.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the people doing the work. They know what the company needs to survive. Talk to them. Tell them what is going on and where things stand.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

It's not too bad, but it could be better

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at NIC full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe potential to make a big impact with a small team. Room for advancement in some career tracts if you want to move around the country.

ConsManagement likes to delegate to middle management and work on advancing their own careers. Lots of bosses, not many leaders. Lots of talk of "company culture" but it's put on the back burner to make shareholders happy.

Advice to Senior ManagementTurn your bosses into leaders.

OK. A place to pick up some skills.

I have been working at NIC full-time for more than a year

ProsSmall office feel. Each office is independent, so experiences could differ greatly!

ConsSmall office feel. It is a medium sized company, but the individual branches are isolated. If you are in with a good crew, then great, but if not, you do not have all that many options to migrate within the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop using timesheets. That is one of the things that bugs me about this place.

Good company, good benefits, poor compensation, poor growth potential

Developer (Current Employee)
Olathe, KS

I have been working at NIC

ProsGood company, good people. Casual, flexible work environment. Employees guinely encouraged to pursue work/personal life balance. Great benefits . . . health insurance paid for entire family, 401K, ESOP, vision. Corporate emphasis on community service.

Cons1. Limited career growth opportunities. Unless your manager gets hit by the proverbial truck or you are willing to relocate to one of their state portals, there are just not that many directions you can go at NIC.

2. Compensation. Unless you are a director level or higher you can count on a cost of living adjustment every year and nothing more, regardless of the performance of the company or yourself personally. Very frustrating philosophy.

3. All of the company's customers are state, federal, and local government entities, so as you might imagine it is not a culture that comfortably embraces change or quick decisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe compensation philosophy has to be reconsidered. When the economy and market start heating up (as they are now at least in technology fields) it will be difficult for good people to not leave knowing they can go down the road and easily get a 15-20% raise.

Pretty decent place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at NIC full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe company truly wants to be a great company to work for (just doesn't know how to accomplish that at times), Great benefits, lots of opportunity to move if that's your goal. You get to see the products you make get used, and have a positive impact on your community.

ConsNot a lot of options for advancement, sometimes expected to fill too many job roles, not enough attention paid to a quality product, too much importance placed on moving to other locations.

Work experience as a goverment employee

Scientific Officer (Current Employee)

I have been working at NIC full-time for more than 3 years

ProsIt is a pleasure to work in a organisation like NIC.Here you get so much respect at district level and also get the opportunity to serve the nation by helping it to develop e-governance.

ConsThe main cons is the salary structure of NIC. It is so low that you cannot survive in a big city.

Advice to Senior ManagementRevise the salary structure.
