I worked at NRG Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Company is always looking for growth opportunities, which allows for good career opportunities for those that want to step up and take on additional responsibilities. I found there to be great work/life balance as project deadlines always seemed reasonable to me and didn't require regular work after normal business hours. In general the employees seemed satisfied and the management and co-workers were mostly pleasant to interact with. Total compensation and benefits always felt fair and maybe a touch above industry norms.

    Cons

There always seemed to be a new re-org. I would have preferred there to be more training opportunities.

I worked at NRG Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

NRG Energy provided numerous opportunities to participate in fleet wide improvement initiatives. Continuous improvement strategies that were demonstrated to be successful at any individual facility were effectively rolled out to the entire fleet through sharing of best in class practices.

    Cons

Opportunities for advancement occur infrequently, and nearly always involve relocation to the other side of the country.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to reward the top contributors while transitioning out the caretakers, in particular at some of the newly acquired facilities.

I worked at NRG Energy as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Open office leads to open managers. The ability to just walk up to the desk of anyone in the company, including the CEO, breeds great morale and greatly facilitates collaboration. Also, great catered lunch.

    Cons

Matrix organization can lead to doing double work, as you try to convince two bosses to agree to a project. Also, as far as the Princeton location is concerned, rush hour traffic is rough.

    Good work with good benefits

I have been working at NRG Energy full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Retirement matching by the company, insurance choices, Paid time off is generous, annual bonuses, and a good safe company to work for.

    Cons

It is hard to advance in certain areas of the company due to the lack of position availability.
I think that the company would benefit greatly from trying to produce new products as opposed to being just another face in the power industry.

I have been working at NRG Energy

    Pros

The work environment is fast paced, and it has an entrepeneurial feel. At the same time, they recognize the value of training, so during down periods it isn't frowned upon to hit the books at the office.

    Cons

The work load is unevenly spread. There is a bit of a hero culture and that means that processes aren't all in place and policies aren't evenly enforced. Not surprising considering the pace of the environment, but there are unrestrained IT "cowboys" in the system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work; everyone trusts the leadership of this company to do the right thing. That said, insist on process.
