Nvidia hires smart guys and turns them into dumb execution machines

    Principal Architect (Current Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

ProsEngineering execution is good. Nvidia has been a market leader in its field. There are some smart people in the company. The company is aware of its social responsibility. They also spend a decent amount of money on employee growth and learning. I think the company culture is good. Oh and by the way, they have free food (upto $5).

ConsLots of arrogant managers who have no clue of what they are doing. Future of nvidia is bleak. Basically smart people are treated like a distributed server farm. Perfect place to become a dumb machine & work like an ass. No innovation. The free food is horribleeeeeee.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave reverse feedback about managers. Pay more emphasis on innovation. Most of the guys are full of crap and your corporate policy about frankness & honesty is complete baloney. Really, management sucks big time.

Think very VERY hard before working for NVIDIA

    Engineer (Current Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

    ProsGreat people to work with.
    Very smart people.
    Great benefits.
People very helpful when you need help.
Get to work on cool projects.

    ConsNeed better communication between groups.

Forced to spend more time at work then with family/friends.

Sometimes you have to work long hours and not very well compensated. Having to be at home on weekends watching work emails to see if you have to come into work is not fun when you could be outside relaxing. Caring the company cell phone and having it go off in the middle of the night is not great either.

Having to work when the company was shut down during Christmas was not great either. Didn;t get extra compensation.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees like "Humans"
Got two words for you "Profit Sharing"

Best place to observe people under stress and strengthen/ sharpen your coping strategies under stress

    Senior Engineer (Current Employee)
    Bangalore (India)

    ProsTechnically skilled people
    Good pay
flexible work hours and you dont have to be at work to work till 2 am, they give you laptops and remote login, imagine staying back every night till 2 am and the logistics, it would have been a nightmare with out flexi hours and the laptop vpn access!

    ConsFavoritism
    pretence and dishonesty
Chairs are designed to give a back ache, whov, what a strategy to weed out people with a back-bone
You will be at the recieving end of the stick until you master the following skills :-
keep your honesty at home, learn to say yes and admire your boss
learn some yoga that makes people wonder if you have a back bone at all
learn to use awesome, amazing, wonderful, great once in every alternate sentences
Oops I forgot to use one of those adjectives for three sentences, I am awesome (yes, thats acceptable, no wrong, its actually expected)

Advice to Senior ManagementYou are awesome ( thats what I am supposed to say, yha I am learning dude, get off my back). okay okay you are great, wonderful as well.

Not a good company to start and build your career

    Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Pune (India)

ProsNvidia does not have any pros.

ConsIndian management is dummy. All is controlled by there bosses in US. The management does not have a spine to speak over an issue. Apart from that you spend your precious time while installing the OS over and over again. Most of the occasion you work on bugs. Soon you will forget whatever you learnt in your college. Very few company which work in the domain in which nvidia is working. It is difficult to switch job if you stick there for too long. You can join nvidia if you are very innovative about how to kill your time.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire your self.

At Nvidia Life becomes a pressure cooker, not for the weak hearted

Senior ASIC Design Engineer (Current Employee)
    Bangalore (India)

ProsWorks in the latest technology. Tegra is doing pretty good.
Good Compensation at par with best in the industry.
You work with some of the most talented people in the industry.
Company has a good roadmap in the smartphone/tablet business.

ConsZero work life balance. You are expected to work on weekends most of the time.
Company doesn't believe that people should have fun in their life. There's no gym in any of its campuses worldwide. No team outings or any cultural events.
Heavy mail traffic. Working with US teams means you have to stay up late in the night, attend calls and respond to mails in the night.
Schedule planning by management is pathetic , it doesn't take into account weekends and other holidays.
Local managers created are totally incapable of handling people they are too aggressive, put too much pressure on people and have unrealistic expectations.
The work culture is very aggressive, if you do not get used to it , your life will be hell here.
Equity compensation is a myth. RSU's are a joke. Before joining negotiate very hard, don't get emotional in their sweet talks of great work and all, once you are in you will not have time for anything else.

Advice to Senior ManagementRespect your employees for their talent. Pay them well and don't take advantage of them.
RSU's have become useless replace them with cash bonus.
Get rid of middle management, work can happen without them also and with better employee satisfaction!

    Great technology; No customer advocacy

    Sales (Former Employee)

ProsSome of the brightest engineering minds in the industry

ConsPoor ethics, management clique, and lack of work/life balance

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on partnering with customers as opposed to manipulating them. Stand-up for what is right instead of simply cowering to e-staff and the CEO. Employees will serve you better when they feel they are part of driving company direction vs simply out of fear of losing their job.

pune center is not worth of joining -

    Software Engineer (Current Employee)

Prospays well as compared to other companies in pune.
    flexi timings.
food is free. but that kind of food is not worth more.

    Consmanagers are spineless.
politics is the main criteria of ratings.
only support work in pune. dont be fooled by the carrots they show while joining.
    unnecssary pressure is created.
people are most unfriendly in pune center.

Advice to Senior Managementtake some basic management training.
to middle managers - have some balls and take engineers side for a change.

    Are some reviewers kidding?

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsEasy to transfer from a team to anther one. Business/technical information is relatively open and available if you know where to look and have time to figure it out. Chances to learn some technologies that may help you land next job.

ConsFlexible hours -- Some BUs are more demanding. If you are in these BUs, you have the flexibility of choosing which 10~12 hours to work in a weekday.
Pay -- For many employees their raises during the past a few years are far less than inflation.
Benefits -- No accrued vacation days. Vacation approval is used as a bargaining chip by the first line manager.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe real about your goals...
