Current Employee - Sales and Marketing Representative in Baltimore, MD

I have been working at NVR full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great Compensation, with an excellent job opportunity. Hire from within and also much guidance as your move forward and learn with the company.

    Cons

Not many downsides. As a Rep, you have to work weekends which could be a downside. The hours are not bad at all.

Amazing Experience, Great People, 100% Meant for Me

Current Employee - Production Intern in Gaithersburg, MD
Current Employee - Production Intern in Gaithersburg, MD

I have been working at NVR as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

-Great People, friendly and a really fun, laidback atmosphere, can't stress this enough, best part about the job
-Work outdoors! If you like to work outside, this job is for you! It is mostly all managing people, and in your down time you can get your hands dirty for fun
    -Every day is different
-Learn a lot of real life skills
-you NEVER sit behind a desk
-Manage a LOT of people and build relationships
    -Huge inventory
-You have no boss every day. You essentially decide every day what you need to get done and you do it, no one tells you what to do
-Unreal Amount of Freedom and yet you still feel motivate to get your work done

    Cons

    - Not much room for growth. YOu basically need to wait 20 years for someone to die and then still compete against 20 other people for the position.
-Knowing spanish makes this job a lot easier
    - Always need to be aware of safety and wearing a hard hat
    - Don't wear nice clothes, spray foam and paint will ruin them
    - Uniform (Khaki pants and a company issued polo)
    -Could have more customer interraction
    - (In a full time job, not as an intern, you probably will work a lot of over time and some saturdays)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Update your computer systems. They're terrible legendary systems.

Former Employee - Data Warehouse Administrator in Reston, VA

I worked at NVR full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A small but advanced IT environment
Opportunities to learn new skills and technologies
Training is fully supported, financed, and encouraged by company
A big company with a small and friendly feel
Most managers are really great to work with
Compensation and Benefits are really good
    Great new employee relocation policies (almost like rolling red carpet out) with company-sponsored move that includes end-to-end packing, transportation, and unload at new location; furnished guest suites for a month; back-and-forth travel sponsored for 3 months if employee still has house and family at old location; assisted sale of employee's old house;
Benefits include good stock ownership plan and home ownership discount if buying from them
Overall - really great environment, colleagues, leaders, and managers to work with

    Cons

    401k plan could be better
IT department needs more funding to expand and grow
"Promoting from within" though claimed but not really implemented because of small size of IT deptt and not many growth opportunities
The current real-estate and home-building scenario is affecting their growth plans and probably not such a great company to work for right now in terms of security
Layoffs occured annually from 2006 - 2008 - however their exit plan is really great. Their severance package is great and includes free 3-month outplacement counselling for job search

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hope you still have the great policies you had back in 2006 - 2008. Never let go of those policies. I will let you think about what is best for your company given the current situation in the industry. Good Luck.

Great company to work for even while the market is down

I have been working at NVR

    Pros

While the housing market is currently slower than the past few years management has continued to think of ways to help the sales staff get the needed sales. We are not paid on percentage commissions, so even though home prices have dropped it hasn't affected our pay directly. The management teams are supportive of your personal/professional goals and are very open to feedback. Constant self-evaluation and feedback from management makes it so that you don't get bored because you're always able to work on something to improve yourself. While promotions have been slowed the growth opportunity is great, even within the position itself.

    Cons

Being part of a large Fortune 500 company can be frustrating at time because of the amount of time it takes to affect change. There are numerous layers to work through before something can be approved, etc...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to think outside the box and continue to solicit feedback from those in the field, not only on the sales side, but on the building side as well - those ideas are the ones that will promote the solutions that we are looking for. It's not ALWAYS about the numbers or earnings per share, but the people as well and sometimes that can get lost in translation.
