I have been working at National Instruments full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great people, a fun atmosphere, and the feeling that the company's products in turn help customers do amazing things.

    Cons

Compensation could be better and there's not very much upward mobility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the company back to growing again.

I worked at National Instruments full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great place to work. Good people who really believe in the company and products. It was a very nice work environment, where I think most people really liked working together. There was also good cooperation between the various departments within the company.

    Cons

Although the work/life balance was in general, sometimes the work could take over. There were a number of times that I had to stay late without any notice to help solve a problem.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, I think they did a good of encouraging a good work environment, while also taking care of the company.

I have been working at National Instruments full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work/Life balance is good. Product development keeps you engaged. Office culture is relaxed and fun. Deck parties are a good boost for morale.

    Cons

Pay and increases are not competitive to the market around town. There is a lot of frustration around the company about this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider truthfully looking at the value of your employees and what they are really bringing to the table.

I have been working at National Instruments full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Casual dress code with food and events going on all the time. Large opportunity to grow in rank quickly. Management is easy to communicate with.

    Cons

Austin is hot and the roads around town and weather are not an ideal environment. Housing prices are increasing rapidly as well. The company's great, but the area's not the best.

I have been working at National Instruments full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The projects are very interesting and enjoyable to work on. The benefits are good, and the opportunities to learn new things when you start are many. I get to wear shorts everyday and occasionally drink beer at work functions. Talk about nice culture. There are decent opportunities for career growth. The CEO, CFO, and other executives are pretty great. They've been able to weather two recessions now without any layoffs.

    Cons

It seems like the company is currently going through some growing pains. I'm sure they will eventually work through it, but the company isn't really growing. Salary quickly falls behind the industry average after a few years of employment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Might need to try new strategies if the company hasn't been growing, rather than waiting to weather the storm or trying to squeeze every little thing for more profit.

    Good place to start career

I have been working at National Instruments full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

There is challenging, interesting work available with supportive management, co-workers, and training opportunities. The work culture and environment are positive.

    Cons

Some do not consider the salaries to be comparable to similar opportunities available at other companies, including the offered benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on more than just the entry-level careers and positions.

  9.

    Pros

The people are friendly, smart, and motivated. The campus is lovely, the company really has a mission.

    Cons

Pay is low, advancement opportunities are stifled by thick wall of 10-20 year experience employees, vacation is pathetic

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better vacation, better telecommuting, better accountability.

I have been working at National Instruments full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

NI is very flexible with your schedule. I never feel guilty showing up a little late for work, taking a long lunch, etc. As long as I put in my 40 hours, I don't get hassled.

The work is interesting. Sometimes it is so interesting that I put in extra hours because I want to, not because I'm expected to.

The people are extremely smart and you will learn a lot. The work is challenging so there is a lot to learn.

For the most part, management is pretty capable and transparent.

    Cons

Salary is poor. Raises are poor. Promotions come with little or no extra money. Benefits are average.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start investing more in your employees. I have seen a lot of good talent leave in the last year for higher paying jobs. NI has a good company culture, but you can't feed your family with good culture.

I worked at National Instruments full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Strong culture focused on teamwork. Community-oriented business that dedicates employee time and money to education initiatives. Great program for building recent college grads into engineering leaders. Core focus on customer success and satisfaction. Fantastic CEO!

    Cons

Must be an engineer to advance, even in marketing-focused roles. Too internally focused on building consensus and having the "perfect plan." Slow-paced, meeting-obsessed culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower employees to make decisions. For example, often times, I had to present information to every individual on the working team and then present the same information to the group as a whole. It would have been more efficient to get buy-in virtually first or present the information to the group as a whole first. Then, schedule a follow-up meeting if things need to get hashed out.
