I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Tipical benifits, politically correct charities and a vast ammount of work loads.

    Cons

Rampant Nepitism as subsidiary (ma n pa shops) make up NOV's walls. Lack of a human eliment in real life employee scenarios.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move in quickly after your mergers or even before, balance your network equally across your "empire". Hold your subsidiaries accountable.

    Pros

Company monopolizes the oil and gas industry which means you will always have a job.

    Cons

Complete lack of ethics, training & accountability. This company is so big it not only bullies other competitors and their suppliers, but also their own employees. It's also not what you know, it's who you know to get anywhere in this company regardless of your contributions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of all the nepotism and hiring of friends and start hiring people that have the right experience and work ethic.

    Pros

Health benefits, potential for overtime if you need it. Good people to work with but not socialize with. Promotions available if you know the right people.

    Cons

Pay is a joke compared to other oil & gas industries. A high number of leaders in middle management is a COMPLETE waste of company money. They are not held accountable for their roles in the future demise of this company. Advancements are based solely on who you kiss up to. Inexperienced workers are promoted based on the friendship and nepotism system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raises to match other comparable companies are probably out of the question, but eliminating managing positions that can clearly be done by an average employee can give the company flexibility to pay more. But good luck with that.

    Pros

Truth is if you're not white, you're not right. No growth within this company not less you kiss butt. It's not what you know, it's who you know.

    Cons

The benefits are great. 401K, Heath, Dental and paid vacation time. There's no chance of growth within NOV. This company sucks big time

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management team have their favorites and there's no fairness. Under pay sweatbox!! This is a company that discriminate against the disable. The whole management team at FM 529 are worthless.

    NOV - Conroe Downhole Division

Former Employee - Manufacturing Manager in Conroe, TX
Former Employee - Manufacturing Manager in Conroe, TX

I worked at National Oilwell Varco full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Estblished product lines, engaged employees, quality products, solid customer base, and nice facilities.

    Cons

No worklife balance, high employee turnover rate, excessive pressure to make improvements without agreed strategies, lack of owenership in responsibilities, false dataset being used in KPI's and the lack of acknowledgement of real data presented. The Conroe division spends too much time chasing problems and should become more employee friendly that would develop continous improvement and work environment for the employees and customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow up! Remove the polictical barriers and take action\support change. Quit demanding unrealistic goals without providing the support and financials to make the improvement. Sure do more with less is a good thing and should be expected, but to do all with nothing is not practical or realistic. Take a look at self before blaming other and stop the verbal threats.

I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

They have excellent benefits. Business always seems good so long term employment is a plus.

    Cons

At the Sugarland facility management is terrible. You have to be in the inner circle to advance or be bad at your job. People are viewed as expendable so there is a large turnover in employees. You hardly ever see people smile out there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be a change in management from the top all the way down to the shops. Old leaders with old ideas or ones who just don't care about the people. It's stagnant and needs new fresh leadership who cares about the people who actually make production happen. Without the shop employees this facility and any other are useless.
