Current Employee - Machine Operator in Bridgeport, TX

I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Minimal oversight, travel pay, a good start for people who want to get into the oilfield. The work is often very easy with little complications.

    Cons

Usually understaffed in the field. The work can be easy, but it can become very difficult with little support. Working as a righand, you have other workers to help you. In this position, however, you are usually working alone. Expect to buy most of your own tools and equipment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A slightly more competitive pay and accomodations for equipment purchased would make field operations much more attractive.

    Pros

Great benefits of working for a large company with many office all over the world.

    Cons

Because it's so large, visibility is a challenge. Challenging status quo is not a good thing here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent with employees and open to disruptive technologies.

I worked at National Oilwell Varco full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Everything seemed okay at first with good benefits, retirement and the like. The management was strong with great projections for the future.

    Cons

Our company was bought then promptly sold off in a matter of a year after much assurance that NOV would never do such a thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a little more forthcoming with your new acquisitions and they may trust you a little more.

Depends on the Division of NOV you are in.

    Former Employee - Sales

I worked at National Oilwell Varco full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Internal job transfers are fairly easy. Work pace is not pressured. On Call schedule varies depending on how many sales people you have working at a given branch. Most all of their service end / rental divisions pay quite well and treat their employees fairly well.

    Cons

Lack of accountability. Even when it came to upper management, it seemed as though people just turned a blind eye to a lot of issues that needed to be addressed. One past worker got drunk and wrecked a work truck and then applied for a store manager position / transfer and it was accepted! Depending on what division of the company you worked for, it seemed there was a wide range when it came to whether or not people cared if they got your business. Their smith fiberglass division was especially bad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find out from people below the managers what's going on. If inventory is constantly off and product isn't getting reordered.... someone is NOT doing their job.
