I have been working at Nationwide full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great organization overall that supports its employees at every level and provides opportunities for professional growth and self development. Educational reimbursement is a huge plus!

    Cons

It's unfortunate that underwriting is being relocated and many employees cannot move with them. The relocation package isn't great, varies by pay band, and there isn't much incentive to move if salaries remain the same but cost of living is drastically higher at the new location. Plus, the workload keeps getting heavier and there are no signs of relief.

    Advice to Management

Maintain the Nationwide culture during transitions and demonstrate "living the values" as the organization combines assets and talent (people) into one brand.

I worked at Nationwide as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very progressive company that gives you autonomy and flexibility in your job. They also have a high level of talent and good compensation.

    Cons

Because of the size of the company, it is easy to get lost in the bureaucracy and feel that you're just a small cog in the mechanism.

I have been working at Nationwide full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nationwide itself is a great environment. The company really does believe in it's mission statement and this comes from the top down. They can get a little 'blowhard' some times but overall they management really believes in doing the right thing and 'helping people' when they need it most. No seriously. I was in an elevator once with some with some big whigs and they were discussing that even though a storm his Pennsylvania and it was going to cost the company, they agreed that 'this is reason why we're here'. If you're in the admin, marketing or IT portion of the company you can pretty much set your own hours. Pretty much everyone is gone at noon on Friday. No problem working from home if you just as long as you get your stuff done. Lots of challenging opportunities and the work makes it constantly interesting. People seem to have a lot of possibilities to move around the company and work on various projects. Downtown environment is great, the buildings themselves are kept immaculate and the each floor has a different theme. It's a 'serious-fun' environment but no one takes themselves too seriously.

    Cons

Call center work can be a bit rough from what I've heard. A lot depends on your manager. Sometimes middle management doesn't listen and tries to micro-manage when they should trust their employees and focus on the 'big picture.' A lot of people have been there for numerous years and can hold grudges. Company is working to invest in technology but doesn't spend the money to hire enough people to implement in time which causes a lot of defect fixing and rework. Also projects will be pushed through even though the particular solution will be replaced by something else down the road simply on political reasons. If you stay out of the politics then you can enjoy yourself, otherwise you get bogged down in misery and never get anywhere. Typical large corporation reshuffle from time-to-time. Healthcare plan is a really lousy.

    Advice to Management

Better Healthcare, and hire the right people to do the right job. Take politics out of the game, improve your call center environment and our customer satisfaction scores will go up. Agile environments with stand up desks does not equal productivity.

    Pros

Many opportunities to advance and experience different business units.

    Cons

Might be difficult for some people to believe they can advance. Its very competitive environment where some associates build "kingdoms" to protect their roles.
