I have been working at NaviSite

    Pros

Flexible work at home, stable list of clients. Have to be self motivator,

    Cons

Salary levels are below market, looking for Time Warner to change this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix the sales team, they are very weak. Cant sell a deal without having client facing teams holding their hands. Start to clean out the management tier from Surebridge, they form too tight a club, which prevents growth of talent. Put some decent management in India, current management is poor and does not know how to retain talent.

I have been working at NaviSite

    Pros

The office floor was always quiet.

    Cons

I worked in the Santa Clara office briefly after my company was acquired. Many of the florescent lights kept flickering or were off completely. My cube was on the 2nd floor over their computer room on the 1st floor and the floor vibrated constantly. I inquired with the maintenance guy there, but nothing got done about any of this.

My fellow employees all seemed down all the time. I found it little depressing. I never saw much organization there or vision from the top. They just seemed to have scattered projects without one vision or identity. The management structure also seemed unclear. My team's manager had about 5 people above him and even he said he was unclear who reported to whom.

Based on what I was told, they bought my old company because we had one super-customer whose business they wanted. Shortly after Navisite bought my company, they lost this customer. Rather than keeping us all to work on other projects, they laid us all off. Then, they tried to hire me back on contract (and at least one other coworker I know of), but without benefits and at the same salary (and the contract would only be for a certain period, like a few months, and then would have to be renewed).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to Navisite management is to become more organized and communicate a clear vision to the employees. Also, get those florescent lights fixed in the Santa Clara office.

    Pros

    8 hrs shift..
    Good transport
    HR is helpful

    Cons

    Poor management
    Politics
    No team work
    Monotonous work routine
    No roles and responsibilities defined.
Forced to do all the work with minimum support even if you dont know anything about it.
Though there are few ok senior managers but again they are not bothered about the employees issues within the team and work. undue pressure of work by the team manager and biasness among the team members making it hard to work with as a team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please start more and frequent trainings for the management guys.. They seriously need it.

    Pros

A chance to gain experience in a managed hosting environment with access to modern enterprise hardware & cloud environments.

There are some extremely dedicated, talented and professional individuals at all levels that keep the company ticking. Very inspiring people!

    It's a good experience for 12-24 months.

Brooks and some of the senior team are inspiring and passionate people.

    Cons

Navisite expect a LOT from you, and the pay & benefits do not reflect this. There seems to be a policy of paying under market value, and the on-call rates absolutely suck. Work/life balance is very poor. I recommend aiming high for salary at your interview as it's unlikely you will get a payrise once in role. They seem to be happy for people to leave rather than pay them market rates!

Operations teams are silo-ed so it can be difficult to get experience in other fields and there is no professional development program to support growth. Messaging in particularly is one of the more cliquey/elitist teams I have worked with.

Time Warner took the company over in 2011 - no positives to this come to mind.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in a proper appraisal and professional development program to encourage the most from staff, and pay people what they are worth!

If you are sales, look elsewhere. Sales management is weak

    I worked at NaviSite

    Pros

Smart technical people who actually care about their work, want to be challenged, and are willing to think outside the box for a solution.

    Cons

Sales management is weak. If you have been in the hosting space for any period of time you see the same backgrounds from telco sales management and "has been" hosting providers. Sadly the stories of "I closed one of the biggest deals ever....I remember when I closed.....", of course these deals were back in 2000 during the dot com days when anyone could close a deal. It's as if NaviSite is the sales manager graveyard for guys from Digex, DataReturn, UUNet, DigitalRiver and so on. And sadly these sames guys bring in their old buddies who haven't sold anything new since the dot com days, yet the management hires them year after year. Maybe sales management talent is hard to come by. I certainly have seen that first hand with some of the dolts NaviSite has hired in the past from places like Digex, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on skills and what makes someone successful instead of what they supposedly did years ago. Everyone knows that getting a customer you sold 3 years ago to move is virtually impossible in the hosting world, unless they are unhappy. Hiring management who say they can make that happen is only deluding yourself. Hire skills, not the the "rolodex". It's not who they know, it's WHO KNOWS THEM.
