I have been working at Navistar full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Ample opportunity to grow, learn, and develop as well as advancement. Many options/pathways to work on and explore for new engineers. Never a dull day.

    Cons

Lacks common sense and robust processes. Plagued by poor decisions. Not doing enough to keep and grow talent within the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to define better process to plan up front. Plan margin for error. Learn from mistakes. Reward employees for their accomplishments in significant/meaningful ways. Seek out and recognize true assets to the company and keep them happy/productive. Pay the "worker bees" before the "queen bees" to help moral and retention. Take time out of the busy days of meetings and fires to meet the teams 2-3-4 levels below you in personal ways (making rounds). Again, recognize the successes and not just the problems.

I have been working at Navistar

    Pros

Strong company with good heritage, many positions and able to move positions is a possibility.

    Cons

Promotions are few and far between in the last two years given the companies condition. Unfortunately they're still slow to help their employees in their career. This is why so many people are leaving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the delay and give your employees a reason to stay at the company. So much talent has left the company it is hurting from lack of experience.

I have been working at Navistar full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The benefits are pretty good. Pretty competitive in most areas. The compensation is decent. Navistar pays at market rates. The annual winter break/shut down is awesome.

    Cons

There is a lot of change and turnover right. Many departments have been forced to do more with less. People are scared due to the uncertainty but management believes we will turn the corner.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We have been in the turnaround phase for a long time. Management needs to communicate more often. They need to look at the attrition and do something to retain the folks that are still here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

See how the majority of your workers are taking the company for granted...not earning what they are paid.

    Pros

Great experience with a long-standing company ... Suffered through popular, yet unproven, engine strategy with no contingency that resulted in terrible results past couple of years; but see a bright future echo has been demonstrated through improved financial results.Opportunities to improve and to work with others with focus on providing more value to our customers

    Cons

Systems outdated ... Inability to reinvest due to current financial conditions ... Organizational changes and Communication

    Pros

Lots of freedom, very knowledgeable people to work with, State of the art Development Facility.

    Cons

Because of the current financial situation there are no promotions. A lot of people is leaving and there are a lot of politics.

Former Employee - Chief Engineer in Lisle, IL

I worked at Navistar full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very exciting work. The leadership was not afraid to take on challenges that allowed ingenuity and product development.
The engineers, especially that more experienced, were great to work with. Friendly, easy to approach, and always ready to mentor and support.
The Lisle and Melrose Park facilities are world class. Great environment to work in!

    Cons

The salaries were barely competitive, and with the financial problems they are having and delayed and low raises, the salaries are now too low.
The new upper management (directors and above) is making the environment difficult. Decisions are typically based on politics and perception and not based on experience and facts.
Work is now shifting to more focus on integration, and not as much on development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Must maintain a balance at the leadership (director and above) between longer term Navistar leaders and the fresh new leaders. The new leaders tend to treat the engineers like numbers and have not exemplified walking the talk.
