Easy Internship

Engineering Intern (Former Employee)
Lisle, IL

I worked at Navistar as an intern for less than a year

ProsVery nice headquarters campus, generous salary and housing stipend given to interns. A lot of interesting, younger engineers work there due to Navistar's move to Lisle, IL a few years ago when a lot of older people decided not to move with.

ConsMany of the interns either had very little to do or they had very involved projects. I first project was super easy excel drudgery but my boss treated it as if it were much more difficult for me and we had many unnecessary meetings -- I read the 4 hour work week at my desk in the time I had finished all of my work and was waiting on him. I should note that my second half of the internship was more involved and interesting. Oh, and they cut their intern program entirely in 2014

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen I was there it seemed like every one was focused on putting out fires much more than innovating. I noticed a few distinct types of people -- generic business types who were excited to be part of a company turn around, interesting young people who had been with the company a few years but were not in leadership roles, and old timers who seemed to do most of the work and were stressed out as a result. The company needs a vision to work towards that can excite the younger employees into doing something more than a typical project engineer.

Great people, great environment, but a struggling company

IT Intern (Former Employee)
Lisle, IL

I worked at Navistar as an intern for less than a year

ProsI interned there in the summer of 2013 for the it department. The atmosphere was very welcoming and training was a breeze. For the first few weeks after training i didn't have anything to do, due to my lack of knowledge in .net. Though i was able to find projects for my manager to complete. Navistar is really a great company, but there was so many changes going on in management that there was no really clear path of where the company is heading

ConsThey should find ways to clear state the goals for incoming interns on what should be accomplished. There was a lot of wasted time and really lack of work. It may good to some people, but i felt wasn't really challenged or gained much experience for future work.

ProsGreat hands on work experience understanding how the business works as a whole. Great culture and atmosphere. Has a great work life balance.

Great

Staff Accountant (Former Employee)
Miami, FL

I worked at Navistar full-time for more than a year

ProsAt Navistar, we are passionate about giving our professionals the tools they need to excel. One way we accomplish this is through carefully crafted development programs that expose participants to a range of applications for their unique skill sets, intra- and inter-departmentally and cross-locationally.

ConsEach of these programs has been refined over time, with several members of Navistar’s current senior management team pointing to these mentor-based programs as excellent foundational experiences and catalysts for their eventual rise within our organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementMost of all, however, these programs matter because your career matters. And we honor that by giving you comprehensive exposure to who we are and what we do so you can determine your best internal fit. In turn, we expect your most impactful contribution.

I learned a lot, but you become good at fire fighting

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Navistar

Prosthere is opportunity for those who excel. The campus is very nice and well set up with exercise centers, putting green, fire pit and sand volleyball courts.

ConsAlthough they talk about out of the box thinking, there always seems to be resistance to that. It seems that costs of doing business are being pushed down to the employees such as cell phones. Maybe providing your own laptop will be next?

Great Company To Have Worked For

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Navistar full-time

ProsA lot of opportunities within the company in multiple areas and disciplines. I was able to use all of my skills and talents to bear on issues and problems that arose.

ConsAt this time the management needs to get a handle on spending that is causing losses every quarter. You cannot lose over $900 million and stay in business.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at the base products and build them better than the other suppliers

Good trucks, great teammates

Chief Engineer (Current Employee)
Lisle, IL

I have been working at Navistar full-time for more than 10 years

ProsNavistar provided me numerous opportunities to broaden out my career and get to know the business better. Their products are very complex and enjoyable to develop. The people have a wide range of skill sets required to design, manufacture and support commercial vehicles. The new integrated facilities are sensational with loads of amenities.

ConsThe transportation industry rises and falls with the GDP, so periodic layoffs are part of the whole package. They have lost a lot of the vehicle product development staff during the move to Chicago and are rebuilding the team.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees as well as your dealers and customers. Communicate the vision to all of them. Don't try to execute strategies without understanding the true risks.

Great Experience!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Lisle, IL

I have been working at Navistar full-time for more than a year

Pros- Excellent facility. One of the best. The all-glass facade provides plenty of natural light, a direct contrast to my previous job at a Fortune 50 company where I could not tell if it was night or day outside.
- Lots of young professionals, a rarity in the automotive industry
- World class fitness center
- Very convenient Metra access for those who want to commute from Downtown Chicago
- Good time to work for Navistar. After years of mismanagement, the company finally seems to be on the up.
- Plenty of opportunities to move internally

Cons- Dysfunctional HR
- Layoffs do not help employee morale but things seem to be turning around for the positive
- No clear promotion structure

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
