    Good

Chief Engineer (Former Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsVery exciting work. The leadership was not afraid to take on challenges that allowed ingenuity and product development.
The engineers, especially that more experienced, were great to work with. Friendly, easy to approach, and always ready to mentor and support.
The Lisle and Melrose Park facilities are world class. Great environment to work in!

ConsThe salaries were barely competitive, and with the financial problems they are having and delayed and low raises, the salaries are now too low.
The new upper management (directors and above) is making the environment difficult. Decisions are typically based on politics and perception and not based on experience and facts.
Work is now shifting to more focus on integration, and not as much on development.

Advice to Senior ManagementMust maintain a balance at the leadership (director and above) between longer term Navistar leaders and the fresh new leaders. The new leaders tend to treat the engineers like numbers and have not exemplified walking the talk.

    Navistar Intern

Aero Lab (Current Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsGood paid, lots of learning. Massive Campus (Lisle) with 2 gyms, 2 cafeterias, a library (very useful), etc.
If you are commuting from the city you can easily get there with public transportation. train in Union Station and as you get off the pace bus takes you right to the campus.

Consfar from the city, they are not doing so well.

    Good work at Navistar

Project Manager (Former Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsWorking with very knowledgeable people. Interesting products. Great campus.

ConsBecause of the current situation at Navistar, a lot of good project were shutdown. Hopefully, the company will turn around the new engine strategy.

    Company is playing catch up

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsLots of freedom, low stress, and great people. There are always opportunities to learn. There are many group functions where you get to bond with coworkers and have fun.

ConsSometimes there is too much freedom causing projects to change often from person to person. Also, there is some resistance when trying to change some of the old ways, even though the company is trying to change for the better.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake consideration when people try to improve products, and communicate more.

    Easy Internship

Engineering Intern (Former Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsVery nice headquarters campus, generous salary and housing stipend given to interns. A lot of interesting, younger engineers work there due to Navistar's move to Lisle, IL a few years ago when a lot of older people decided not to move with.

ConsMany of the interns either had very little to do or they had very involved projects. I first project was super easy excel drudgery but my boss treated it as if it were much more difficult for me and we had many unnecessary meetings -- I read the 4 hour work week at my desk in the time I had finished all of my work and was waiting on him. I should note that my second half of the internship was more involved and interesting. Oh, and they cut their intern program entirely in 2014

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen I was there it seemed like every one was focused on putting out fires much more than innovating. I noticed a few distinct types of people -- generic business types who were excited to be part of a company turn around, interesting young people who had been with the company a few years but were not in leadership roles, and old timers who seemed to do most of the work and were stressed out as a result. The company needs a vision to work towards that can excite the younger employees into doing something more than a typical project engineer.

Great people, great environment, but a struggling company

IT Intern (Former Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsI interned there in the summer of 2013 for the it department. The atmosphere was very welcoming and training was a breeze. For the first few weeks after training i didn't have anything to do, due to my lack of knowledge in .net. Though i was able to find projects for my manager to complete. Navistar is really a great company, but there was so many changes going on in management that there was no really clear path of where the company is heading

ConsThey should find ways to clear state the goals for incoming interns on what should be accomplished. There was a lot of wasted time and really lack of work. It may good to some people, but i felt wasn't really challenged or gained much experience for future work.

    Great learning and job experience!

Lead Systems Engineer (Current Employee) Madison Heights, MI

ProsGreat hands on work experience understanding how the business works as a whole. Great culture and atmosphere. Has a great work life balance.

ConsIt is difficult completing certain tasks/projects at times due to misdirection or lack of clarity of what is supposed to be accomplished for a specific project.

    Great

Staff Accountant (Former Employee) Miami, FL

ProsAt Navistar, we are passionate about giving our professionals the tools they need to excel. One way we accomplish this is through carefully crafted development programs that expose participants to a range of applications for their unique skill sets, intra- and inter-departmentally and cross-locationally.

ConsEach of these programs has been refined over time, with several members of Navistar’s current senior management team pointing to these mentor-based programs as excellent foundational experiences and catalysts for their eventual rise within our organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementMost of all, however, these programs matter because your career matters. And we honor that by giving you comprehensive exposure to who we are and what we do so you can determine your best internal fit. In turn, we expect your most impactful contribution.
