I have been working at Neiman Marcus full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The discounts are great for employees. That's about it.

    Cons

Worst of all is the management in the store. Never have I expericed such an unprofessional work environment. Karen Katz herself should do some re evaluating of the executive team in the Paramus location.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should focus more on themselves and what they are doing to improve the store instead of the sales associates.

I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Spacious and Beautiful sparkly things to look at
Morning meetings only to learn about products offered

    Cons

Draw commission. you will always owe the company money.
Not enough customer traffic in Oakbrook.
Seasoned employees take advantage of new people not knowing all the operations on register.
Terrible training, learn as you go and have to depend on unfriendly employees that steal commissions.
General attitude across the company is a bully mentality
Not a place for friendly sales.
They invest you in the lowest retirment package.
Overpriced items and lack all items in the store that are offered Online

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work culture is not good, but employees are unfriendly.
Opportunistic approach to elderly customers, not caring about the want just looking at capital gain.
    Management does not resolve issues.
Management reports everything to Human Resources.
Human Resources should stop micromanaging for Managers by building personal relationships as friends. Also, Human Resources stop shifting blame back onto the employees to avoid resolving internal issues.

    Pros

Good pay if you are a product specialist. This makes it hard to leave for another position with equal amount of money

    Cons

I have worked here for years and seen so many unjust things happen to others. It is a nightmare.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Employee discount, meeting new people

    Cons

NO LEADERSHIP or support from top management at all. They are only concerned about making their own bonus so they can continue to strut their stuff in Chanel. Merchandise managers doesn't even know how to use the cash register, and have very little knowledge about the products on the floor. Even though you only get paid commission, they continued to scold you for low store sales while not doing anything to bring in business. They claim to care about customer service, yet only give away free things to those who throw fits, not real customers. Open return policy can turn your pay check into minimum wage. "Customers" take full advantage and returns worn clothes from last year and employees still have to return their commission. HR never returns emails or phone calls unless they are asking for a donation from you! Lots of RED TAPE!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, reward them for good service.

    Product specialist cosmetics

I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Discount, pay, fashion, $1 coffee

    Cons

Very poor development and review policies are unfair for product specialist in cosmetics.

Sales people don't know how to do make up but make a lot more money. All they do is clerk. There are very few of them that work hard. They don't help to even clean counters or help clean make up brushes. Product specialists do 80% of the work while sales make more money. There's no development for business managers who sometimes do not have experiences managing.

HR is also a huge problem. They say they promote from with in but you ask to work for another line and they give you the run around. If you want to transfer it's the same thing.

Also their client system is super outdated. Got new registers with the same system, then what's the use.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change your cosmetics review system, it's unfair. Truly promote and better develop business manager who have no idea how to manage. Clean up your HR policies.

Unprofessional management, lacking corporate structure and not employee friendly

    Current Employee - Product Specialist

I have been working at Neiman Marcus full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The store hours are better. Hourly pay for a product specialist position is higher than some of the other retailers.

    Cons

Bonuses are not paid in cash. Only by Neiman Marcus gift cards. Corporate policies change with the wind. IT technology far behind Nordstrom and Macy's. Health benefits are ok. The out of pocket is high for medical coverage $1500 plus another $600. Really? A Corporation the size of NM couldn't negotiate a better policy. In our store an employee who has had written and substantiated complaints receives no punishment. I am not sure what the maximum number is before management deems it necessary to review. Requesting a transfer to another store is not handled in a timely manner. Some store managers micro manage their department managers to the extent of forcing them to take a stress leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know in my store that there have been dozens of letters written to corporate headquarters in Dallas regarding our poor management. We have lost too many valued employees who were in management positions due to this problem. Corporate needs to address this issue.
The policy of returns: Items that are returned to another store from which it was bought have to absorb the negative dollars. If you are a product specialist that amount counts against your yearly goal. If the store does a low volume business it's difficult to make up the difference and therefore you can be terminated by not making your yearly season.

    Pros

great discount on designer products - gratis can be great as well. Easy interview process.

    Cons

management, extremely slow environment - all higher ups are complete micro managers and watching your every move. Treated like children, not a big opportunity for advancement - will hire pretty much anyone - lazy employees who just stand around and do nothing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust in your employees, better pay! Commision is terrible especially in a slow store - returns can essentially make you owe the company money!

I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I learned I never will work for a company based in Texas. Middle Management tends to be fairly intelligent and understanding as opposed to the upper management coming from Dallas. Perks were few but there is some advantage to exposure to the many luxury retailers through Neiman Marcus.

    Cons

Store manager fired for racist comments. Employee performance based solely on sales numbers - levels of customer service never taken into account. Pay is meager - generally minimum wage plus commission.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of your employees - and they will begin to care for your company. The store I worked in had a 50% turn-over rate (400 employees - 200 left or were fired every year).
