I worked at Nelnet as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Co-workers are all nice including management.

    Cons

Managers are hired from within based on time with company, instead of having good manager qualities. Many of the advisors know more than the managers about the student loan industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire management based on qualifications, not just time with Nelnet

I have been working at Nelnet full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Some of the other employees are good to work with. They feed you occasionally, and offer fun incentives for time off and dress down.

    Cons

The required five hours of overtime weekly, and occasional Saturday or Sunday, for the last nine months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire enough people to take care of the loans you have before taking on more, and overwhelming all of your employees. This is the reason people are quitting.

    Pros

The employees are great to work for and you make a decent pay.

    Cons

The upper management is no good. They are not speedy and they set back and let the employees do all the work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get off your buts and make this a better company.

The reality: it's a call center job.

I have been working at Nelnet

    Pros

    - You will be an expert on student loans and debt after this job
    - Benefits for full time employees are standard are good.
    - Pay is at least above minimum wage
    - This is probably one of the best jobs you can get if you don't have a college degree or you dropped out of college.

    Cons

Don't be fooled by the fancy job title, you are a DEBT COLLECTOR working in a CALL CENTER for 8 hours straight. It is migraine-inducing and you are expected to harass broke idiots who can't pay their debt because they have no money. Quality assurance and supervisors monitor your every move and you are expected to perform a certain way within a certain time frame. It's repetitive, dry, boring, frustrating, and depressing all in one. Some of the supervisors and team leads are friendly and approachable for help while others are rude and lazy and don't help while instead they sit on the computer all day on Facebook. Not to mention trying to get help from the other departments is a pain. The supervisors expect too much out of such a low-paying position. They try to motivate you by acting like this is such a high end professional career. That's a joke.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't expect the DMC specialists to perform up to your standards when you don't even really exhibit great standards are supervisors and managers. If you don't want a buncha potheads and poor irresponsible losers working here, maybe you should PAY MORE.

    I worked at Nelnet

    Pros

benifits are good, my direct managers were great. The information from on top was never what the situation turned out to be once all is said and done. this makes it hard to trust you job will be there.

    Cons

I was told that I would have a job for over a year and in the end, 1 month prior to the big day, I got the axe. All my performance reviews were outstanding.l

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

do not tell an employee one thing, and then change your mind at the last min. Any employee would rather be given the worst case and then get good news instead of what you did to me, best case and your gone with no time to find other oppertunities.
