    Pros

I worked there for almost 9 years (before they relocated the corporate office to Denver). GREAT bonuses and the pay was not THAT bad. Our co-workers became a FAMILY...wonderful work/life balance.

    Cons

The only part I really DID NOT like was that the supervisor would cuss you out in front of everyone but then would take you behind closed doors to apologize.

    Pros

Nelnet has a great company culture, building relationships with coworkers is important. The focus on customers throughout the company and at all levels gives real value to what we do each day.

    Cons

The organization is very conservative in many ways, and that sometimes makes it difficult to meet goals, as well as keep good people. Many of our top notch people leave for higher salaries elsewhere.

    Pros

    • Focus on leadership development through education reimbursement, company-sponsored training and internal/external opportunities for training and leadership
    • The company invests in employees' health through a robust wellness program that rewards healthy living
    • Forward-thinking, innovative executive leadership
    • Large, publicly-traded company with great benefits, including generous time off
    • Open, transparent culture without a lot of hierarchy
    • Decisions are made quickly without a lot of red tape to hold back progress
    • Performance based focus means reward for drive, ambition and proven success

    Cons

    • Fast-paced culture is not a great fit for everyone
    • As with many companies, being asked to do more with less--must be good at prioritizing and nimble with making changes
    • Large government contract means a higher level of security compliance and process

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    • Continue to listen to those on the front lines. That has been a priority in the past; and has helped make a lot of positive change.
    • The focus on wellness and leadership development is refreshing
    • Perhaps toot our own horn a little more about all the ways we give back to the community

    Pros

Nelnet is a young-minded company full of some of the brightest minds I've worked with. It had a supportive yet autonomous environment, and committed the resources necessary to meet our objectives.

    Cons

I would include conservative management as an occasional drawback, but that conservative approach has kept them strong through trying times. I do think during my stretch there, they grew too quickly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to percolate ideas and innovation up through the ranks of managers and directors - there is a lot of talent in your field operations.

    Pros

I've worked for Nelnet almost 8 years and this is what I've learned. Senior management has been very good at creating and maintaining new business. They've also been very good at managing the company's money when national legislation affected the company's bottom line. I care about that because it means layoffs aren't necessary and the company stays in business. I am able to balance my work and personal life and I take time off when I need it without any trouble.
I have had the pleasure of working for some of the best managers I've experienced in my 25+ year career.

    Cons

While I've experienced very, very good first-tier managers, I've also had some not-so-good managers here at Nelnet. However, I've encountered bad managers in all the companies I've ever worked for so Nelnet isn't any different in that regard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Since first-tier managment is so crucial to whether or not someone enjoys their job, I would like to see Nelnet do more training or take more discretion in who they place as that first-tier manager or team lead. That person should understand the day-to-day operation and details that their employees experience.
