NetApp's Forbes 100 top company rating standard is "very overrated". The benefits/work environment is overrated.

    Pros

Beer bashes every other week is great. If you know what you are doing management will let you do it.

    Cons

Benefits are average. Raises and Health benefits are nothing to talk about.
Company states high values especially to employees but no real action.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider your employees more especially on salary, benefits and rewards for good work.

    Cons

Not the highly rated company it used to be. Tends to promote from outside.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take employee feedback seriously and do something about it.

    Pros

This is a big company, just like any other big companies. I don't see big difference from my last employer. I think any company, once its size reaches certain threshold, they all become alike.

    Cons

Many things come to my mind, but I don't think it appropriate to write them in a public site. Sorry that I cannot provide more info.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at NetApp full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There are a few pockets of brilliance. I enjoyed working on a high performing team for most of my tenure at NetApp.

    Cons

There are many mediocre managers who are interested in self-promotion and are not contributing to moving the company forward. Unfortunately, upper management appeared to not have a clue who these people were even though HR knows. They were unable or unwilling to eliminate bully managers who are detrimental to the company's success. Lots of political infighting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Become aware of who on their Senior Leader's team is contributing and who is detracting from their success.

    Pros

    1. Generally good work-life balance.
    2. Lots to do if you are motivated and supported.

    Cons

    1. No clear owner for projects and releases.
    2. Too many forced shutdowns take away all your vacation days.
    3. Resistance to work on innovative products and technologies.
    4. Lot of politics at higher level, both technical and managerial.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Stop GPTW propaganda and start free food, adopt new technologies.
    2. Think outside the storage box, consider doing meaningful stuff for cloud and Big data!
    3. Audit your org structure and remove unnecessary PMs and middle mgmt with their own agendas.

I worked at NetApp full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The employee benefits and work life balance are very good. Employee training is great and you are expected to attend regular training sessions to improve your management skills and awareness. Employees are generally friendly
    & focused on their work.

    Cons

There is an undercurrent of frustration and uncertainty that runs through marketing among the various teams. A large part of that is the constant budget battle and changes within the organization which take place on a fairly regular basis resulting in confusion about how they are going to accomplish the goals that have been outlined. The higher the level of management, the less in touch with the actual challenges the budget issues evoke among the teams, limiting the ability for cross-functional cooperation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to realize that constant change within the organization means that there is little to no time for employees to adjust and accomplish goals before they are readjusted. The marketing budget issue needs to be addressed.

Former Employee - Technical in Remote, OR

I worked at NetApp as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Professional growth, technical excellence of colleagues. Management generally good, although not always "on the same page" with one another. I worked for a business line that was a corporate purchase and the original functions had not been completely integrated into NetApp even after years, so my impression might not be reflective of the parent organization.

    Cons

Contractors held as a breed apart, no real path for integration or eventual hire. Seemed to be a culture of non-cooperation between divisions within the organization. Not a lot of teamwork, sort of a rock-star mentality that caused a lot of frustration, duplication of effort and wasted work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn that teamwork has a role. Manage your managers. Stop the constant, needless churn in organizational structure - pick a plan and live with it for a year or two.
