Great Products with a lot of potential

    Systems Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsDecent benefits and compensation. Volunteer time provided in addition to vacation time. Great product line.

ConsRepeating what another employee posted - it's difficult to grow within the company. First you feel bored in the same position, you become trapped and then become complacent. I think it's more common then mgmt wants to admit. Laid back attitude amongst protected employees does discontent.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake an honest realistic look at what's not working and do something about it otherwise the company will go into a tailspin. Partner strategy should be reviewed as it sometimes just doesn't make sense especially when the customer is against it. It seems anybody can hang a shingle outside their door and become a NetApp partner. We need to be much more selective. Do something with the billions in cash in the treasury.

    Software Intern

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsPeople are friendly, good work to be done. Work/life balance is valued. Have the option of working from home Employees can come and go whenever you want as long as you get the work done.

ConsProject was not well defined. I was asked to make decisions and give opinions without enough information. Did not feel completely comfortable with the team as other interns were. A good experience, depends on the manager and team. Interns at headquarters have a more enjoyable experience compared to other sites it seems.

Advice to Senior ManagementDefine a project scope in advance and make sure everyone knows what can be accomplished. More guidance needed for interns.

    Used to be great

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsStill has a good culture

ConsNot the same place it used to be. Very political environment. Sales has all the power

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your teams, everyone wants change but the more things change the more they stay the same

    It's all ups and down

Member Technical Staff, Software (Current Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsWork/Life balance is good. They have strong storage market presence which is good.

ConsIt's not typical software tech company in bay area. It's a typical hardware company environment where you feel company is too choosy (miser) in bringing up the in office environment. You need to pay for everything - even they stopped giving RSUs. If you are on non-immigrant visa, they don't pay for your expedite processing fees.

Senior management still trying to mask things with GREAT CULTURE

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

Pros5 years back there were a lot if good things happening and people from top to bottom are all working together to make things great. Financial outlook was looking great that a lot of good initiatives could take place. Some if these highly competent employees are still here fighting the battle, BUT........

ConsBut...., those that are doing the honest hard work trying to turn things around are getting frustrated, and are losing confidence in the company. Annual layoffs not helping, hiring more arrogant industry vet/dumbrears not helping. Most people dont get recognized or rewarded for their crucial supporting roles. Only people making sales and revenue do. This is unfair. Also because of fear of layoff and ensure job security, SMEs horde knowledge and skills so they can keep getting credit for what they excel at. This is bad culture going around.

Advice to Senior ManagementFundamental internal processes need to be evaluated and be put on priority to fix ASAP if you want this company to go longtetm and have sustainable growth. Get those senior management level people to stop looking at where to get more revenue and look for where to improve streamline process and Support Operations. BEWARE, saving cost isnt always your first solution. Stop the BS sugguestion from big 4 consultants. Stop masking problems with GREAT CULTURE, people will find out sooner or later.

A little too proud of how they think they treat their employees

    Principal QA Engineer (Former Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsNetApp had a good cash flow, allowing them a nice campus with a phenomenal gym. The pay was above Silicon Valley average based on what I saw.

ConsThey seemed to have taken their corporate culture from former Sun employees. They grew too quickly and then, realizing their mistake, laid off 10% of the company in 2013, and more the year after.

The engineering bureaucracy had become so convoluted that it was difficult to get anything done on a macro scale in a short amount of time. Everything had a committee, forcing small groups to ignore the rules and regulations to just get things done.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop spending so much time congratulating yourselves on being a great place to work -- when you've laid off 10% of your employees, it is, perforce, not a great place to work.

Spend time reviewing engineering processes and decentralize them to reduce the bottlenecks that exist.

There is a lot of engineering debt that needs to be paid. Pay the price and fix the problems in engineering instead of just hoping it will be fixed magically

Good company, but you definitely earn your pay

    Senior Product Manager (Former Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsGood pay. Good people. Decent products. Lots of money to stay afloat for awhile, even during tough times.

ConsVery long hours. Lots of stress. No work/life balance. No promotion from within. Should spend more time making it a great place to work instead of on all of the marketing of this goal. Not a diverse product portfolio.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to diversity the product portfolio. Promote from within.

It's just routine, nothing special, don't know why it appears in best companies to work for list. its just OK company.

Member Technical Staff, Software (Current Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsTraining, work-life balance, senior management, culture. People around are very helpful. Management up to 2 levels above a normal employee is very good.

ConsTime off policies, too many unpaid shutdowns. There are no special benefits. Pretty much the same as any below avg company.

Advice to Senior ManagementUn-paid shutdowns, pretty much standard in fact on par only with below avg companies.
