    Formerly 5-star, now a bit adrift

    Director of Engineering (Former Employee) Los Gatos, CA

    ProsSmart co-workers with the basics of a great corporate culture.
    Lack or management direction means lots of job flexibility (back-handed pro?).
    Good product that has potential.

    ConsLacking a future strategic vision from the exec team.
    Not an innovation culture for engineers, more of a tinkering culture with mindless obsession to A/B testing.
    Didn't learn from the Qwikster debacle and hasn't returned to a focus on customers - they're just numbers on a chart to management.

    Advice to Senior ManagementRealize Netflix needs to be more than just a content middle-man to succeed long term.

    I had a great ride at Netflix up to the point where Reed torpedoed the company with the Qwikster idiocy. Despite the obsession with testing user experience, almost nothing was done to test consumer reaction to the Qwikster plan before it was announced (haphazardly at that).

    Put customers first again and deliver the BEST combined streaming and DVD experience possible. Despite the religious conviction to kill the DVD business, wait on doing this until the rest of the population is ready for it. Forcing the issue is hurting Netflix in the short term, and this damage is opening an opportunity for competition.

    No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Sword of Damocles

    Director (Former Employee) Los Gatos, CA

    Pros- great physical work environment in Los Gatos
    - great co workers: highly motivated, intelligent, impressive experiences. Netflix hires people at the peak of their games
    - at the time (2007-2010), it was an exciting time of growth in the online streaming space, with consistent growth in the DVD space; fun to be on the cutting edge, and high growth.
    - great compensation; employees are well paid

    Cons- there is a constant sword of damocles (i.e. the threat of removal) hanging over your head. even when you think you are doing well, you can be released unexpectedly, at a moment's notice. (this results in a culture of fear)
    - there is no career path; Netflix hires you to perform a job, and once that job is over, it's easier for them to let you go rather than retrain or relocate you.
    - this is not the place to be if you want work/life balance; not family friendly

    Advice to Senior Management- missteps from a year ago (i.e. 2011 - Qwikster) have caused a loss of confidence in management
    - there are still lots of people in the US that want to rent DVDs; much better selection, and much better accessibility. It feel like Netflix is now content to ignore them and move on. What happened to the great customer service that built the brand?

    Powerful brand, unpleasant place to work

    Senior Manager (Former Employee) Los Gatos, CA

    ProsGreat brand
    Disciplined
    Focused
    Good at execution and keeping schedules

    ConsPerformance driven culture = culture of fear and suppression
    Few chances for development or advancement
    Management does not seem to care about employees as people
    Not at all a fun place to work, very hard to build relationships

    Advice to Senior ManagementBe more humble
    Use more advanced technology
    Manage down instead of expecting staff to manage up

    The marketing and PR team is lost

    Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Los Gatos, CA

    ProsThe engineers are the smartest most capable bunch I have worked with in my career.

    ConsThe executives have no clue how to run the company. Their success is based on luck and they are proud to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

    Advice to Senior ManagementGet a new marketing and PR team.

    Used to be much better! Wait for some senior management changes before you consider.

    Senior Engineering Manager (Former Employee) Los Gatos, CA

    ProsFreedom to use latest technology. Large customer base. Smart engineers. Profitable company able to hire and properly resource development effort. Well known brand. Product is loved by most customers, and available just about everywhere. Competition is behind. Clear leader in unlimited streaming.

    ConsSenior leadership very confused. Communication from the top done very poorly. Lots of knee-jerk reactions and fire drills. Software complexity is very high, but cross functional coordination is poor. Poor management of growth. Lots of really bad decisions made. Hired too fast in 2010-2011 (and added too many mediocre managers), and now they are paying the price.

    Advice to Senior ManagementBreak up the old boys club and bring in skilled senior management from the outside who know how to run a global company at scale. Engineering talent is good, but current management is lacking ability to handle the company's growth and properly leverage the talent.

    Uncomfortable environment with lackluster management

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Los Gatos, CA

    ProsNo vacation policy and flexbility. High pay, which is meant to replace some of the perks that other companies offer. Interesting and fun industry. Employees are smart and work as a team for the greater good.

    ConsThe "freedom and responsiblity" culture works for some, as long as you do not disagree with management. There is very high turnover. When people are let go, they are surprised. People are afraid to make mistakes, which makes for a stressful enviroment. I have never felt comfortable working there. Management is out of touch with its customers and makes hasty decisions that contradict common sense. Employees suffer because of this. Why would the former CFO leave when the stock on its way to its peak?

    Advice to Senior ManagementYour employees are valuable resources. Treat them as such.

    High performance with high forced attrition

    Senior Engineer (Former Employee) Los Gatos, CA

    Prosgood pay (not compared to the expectations) . its good ROI for netflix not to employee.
    if ur an expert and u r stuck in ur place then netflix can reward u good.
    it can allow you to be a mster of everything and allow merit speak than leadership.

    Consit depends on ur manager's discretion. so if ur gaurded to be urself then its the place to work.
    unrefined office culture is prone to exploitation. counter productive culture and fear is developed and growing faster.

    Advice to Senior Managementstart smacking the time and hear the employees voices to keep the best in the winning side.

    * Extreme, Agile
    * Psudo-unlimited vacation policy
    * Great experience

    Cons* High turnover, No loyalty.
    * Fear of being perceived as complacent despite monotony.
    * Monitor your burnout.

    company attitude: we pay you well and can kick you out at any moment , you shut up and put up with our rubbish

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Los Gatos, CA

    Proshigh salaries
    fast pace environment

    Conscompany mentality: full-time employees are long term contractors
    experienced managers turn down Netflix opportunities due to a known short average "life span" of mid and low-level managers at the company (for example, IT and OPS managers usually last about 1 year)
    an employee can be laid off just because their project is over or he does not have skills for a new project

    Advice to Senior Managementget a new blood not only in a low/mid level but upper management as well

    No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
