    I worked at Netflix full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Leeway to learn and gain experience with diverse technology.
    Pay was above market.
    Work with fantastic people.
    Free subscription & good "product".

    Cons

    People are treated like toilet paper. It is not a "family", this is true, but it is not a "team", either. The group I worked in processed hires & fires access rights: I have never seen so many people fired, without warning, while they were ON vacation - leaving our group to receive and deal with calls from confused people (some of them Directors of hubs), who returned ready for work to no access and no information on what was happening.
    Lousy communication between groups.
    Excessively High turnover - instead of leveraging employee knowledge & experience - people are overworked, used up, & thrown out like trash - the alumni group should read "NETFLIX PTSD Group".
    80 hr work week *minimum*.
    No work-life balance.
    I had 4 managers in 1year of employment & the entire team I was on was replaced during that time and (you guessed it) one of the most awesome employees was fired while he was *ON* vacation: *THAT* was extremely awkward, as he was stellar...it was just a regime change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    As if they care what former employees think: Treat people like human beings and show some basic respect. Have *meaningful* employee-management meetings and encourage open communication instead of the "keep doing what you're doing" until people are blindsided by termination.

    Stay away. Too many great people are arbitrarily let go, with no warning or cause. Zero stability. Fear culture.

    Pay, free lunch. Some awesome people.

    Cons

    Jerks, underachievers, people who have risen to upper management who don't have talent. Boring. Not innovative. No vacation policy means it's abused by people at the top and people at the bottom are too scared. HR is corrupt.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop worrying so much about yourself, try to make a great product. Stop wasting so much money, it's disgusting.

    I have been working at Netflix full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    I've been around almost 5 years and 5 years ago this was the best place in town to work Where the average rep said they might get 2 angry calls a day, management listened and worked with you, extra perks were provided, though if you are good at your job you mostly get left alone. It is easy to request time off at least.

    Cons

    Over the last 5 years they have gradually removed most perks, computer systems are old broken and questionably secure, chairs are even falling apart, in 5 years no one but management has ever received a raise, this year most of us actually took a paycut for doing more work than we were expected to do when originally hired at the same rate. Schedule changes every 6 months with little to no flexibility for students or parents. Questionable business practices with retaliation if you ask too many questions. Entirely metrics based assessment, some supervisors are very supportive and some give absolutely no support if they respond to questions at all, so your ability to perform your job often does on your luck getting placed with a responsive supervisor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Management has been visibly around though I've personally never had a conversation with any currently employed manager in 5 years, only those managers who have since been fired. So while visibly there also strangely absent and disconnected.

    They are very hard to please. Hard to maintain good numbers when the service is the issue.

    Management overall is quite bad. Most people get promoted to the role based on seniority, not on actual ability to lead and mentor others.

    Pros

    Pay and the Netflix name helps on your resume, since most people outside do not know how bad it is inside.

    Cons

    Mind numbing. Stress. Constantly watching your back. There are people who have very high title (Directors, Managers, even VPs) who got it because they've managed to stay there the longest. Not because they are qualified for the job. The long timer/oldtimers survived by CYA each others. Those who they think are dangerous to their job will get the knife in the back.

    It's not how good you are. It's how well you "play the game" and "fit in with the political culture". They value "safe" decisions that do not rock the boat. At least in the IT Ops dept that I worked in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get your head out of the cloud once in a while. There's real problem underneath. Engineering got tired of the dysfunctional IT Ops group, and built their own infrastructure so they don't have to deal with incompetent people.

    Best thing to do is fire everyone in Ops, and start fresh.

    Pros

    Free movies, before the last set of layoffs there was genuine regard for employee satisfaction and feedback was often solicited not only to improve business processes but also to gauge morale. After a while, not so much...

    Cons

    Frequent layoffs. Whole departments got laid off at a time. I guess I should have figured how it was going to be when the entire management team save one manager was suddenly gone a few months after I had completed training, which btw was before the 2008 meltdown. The entire QA team was let go a few months later and the entire Tech support team shortly thereafter.

    Seems as though it would be difficult to keep quality people if the company lays off entire departments.
