I worked at Neuberger Berman full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

access to intelligent portfolio managers and company research

    Cons

growth potential is extremely limited; career mobility appears to be a fallacy and is not supported by managers. there is a lot of subtle racism within middle management, often times favoritism being shown towards "the good ol' boys". many of the client facing roles are in groups that are chauvinistic and overtly sexist, with grossly inappropriate behavior that is ignored by management. this is a company where you should spend no more than 1-2 years to simply get a name on your resume, then pack up and move on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

promote talent from within and you will build a strong company with a strong future.

I worked at Neuberger Berman full-time

    Pros

Started out with positive work/life balance then went downhill. For the most part, great people to work with, except for a few bad apples that make work life unbearable.

    Cons

Lack of leadership, vision and poor management decision making skills in the back office administration company. Career path is not explained well and advancement is nearly non-existent unless you are at the lower staff levels.

I have been working at Neuberger Berman full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Decent medical benefits. Some good people still there but it is changing quickly. The profitably is high but used mainly to reduce debt.

    Cons

Has become very political. Very different from a few years back. Many people are looking elsewhere for work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Partners should take a look at the changes implemented in the last 2 years and adjust.

I have been working at Neuberger Berman full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Co-workers are freindly and easy to get along with. The hours are flexible and I can sometimes work from home.

    Cons

    Pay is low
401k could be much better, espeacially considering that we are an investment company
    Technology is very outdated.
Everyday is perpetually worse than the day before.

I just want to add that I was at my last job in the same industry for 5 years and really enjoyed it, but we decided to relocate to NYC for personal reasons and I took the first job that was offered. However I did think that this could have been a great oppurtunity and that I could advance in the company. I was mistaken, I look around at people who have been here 10+ years and are still at my level. I personally don't like interviewing and didn't want to job hop, but I have no choice. This place flat out sucks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put some money and resources into operations, its not 1993 anymore. Also you could think about changing the structure of the 401k. Last year at my old company matched 100% of my first 4% and then 50% of my contribtuions up to 10%, not to mention my end of year performance bonus match. I contributed 6% and they matched 5% in addition to the 8% bonus, that is 13%; I got 0% from NB becuase I hadn't been here a year yet. Your "Robust" compensation plan that I was told about turned out to be pure "BS."

I have been working at Neuberger Berman

    Pros

Small firm, so easy to get noticed. Work life balance is OK, though not great. It is less pressure environment compared to investment banks. The money management teams have excellent reputation on the street.

    Cons

As the firm is small, the potential to grow is limited. After Lehman bankruptcy, the management is chaotic and self serving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Adopt employee friendly management practices.

I have been working at Neuberger Berman

    Pros

Entrepreneurial environment, strong sales force, very seasoned portfolio managers, high retention rate,

    Cons

Poor management after Lehman Bankruptcy, poor benefits, politics between Neuberger employees and Lehman employees, no leadership, no clear direction as to where the firm is heading.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many layers of management. Cut away the layers.

    I worked at Neuberger Berman

    Pros

Well known company name in the industry. Ability to learn via access to company research about the financial markets and the portfolio management teams.

    Cons

Misguided during the interview process of the growth potential of the job. Once I was in the job there didn't appear to be a lot of potential for growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show more interest in your employees future and have more direct discussions with them about what their future can be within the group/company.

I have been working at Neuberger Berman

    Pros

At this point in time, all bets are off as it's still up in the air as to who will purchase NB after the Lehman debacle. At this point, honestly the only good reason to work here is that when whoever finally purchases NB finally does, there will be a lot of work building not only applications but infrastructure as they will be losing that from the Lehman side.

    Cons

Limited advancement paths as a manager since all of the senior spots have remained the same from prior to the Lehman purchase of NB to the current situation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Honesty is the best policy.

I have been working at Neuberger Berman

    Pros

Solid reputation as a traditional money manager
Not a bad name for younger employees to toss on their resume
    Decent work-life balance

    Cons

Money management teams and not firm execs really do rule the world
Advancement is based on seniority just as much, if not more than, performance
    Complete lack of employee accountability

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Executives need to run the firm instead of chasing their tails
    Develop performance-based advancement policies
    Communicate more clearly with employees
