I worked at New York City Department of Education full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

If you are in the NYCDOE, you receive great benefits. Obviously, the entire school system of NYC is very difficult to review as everything depends on which school you are working at and which position.

    Cons

In terms of the system as a whole, it's very difficult to navigate, and incredibly time consuming because of all the bureaucracies to navigate. Personally, I felt that my onboarding and orientation process was nonexistent, and coming into one of the largest school systems in the US is overwhelming. I was in the administrative line and received very little professional development and growth in my 2+ years. If you're young and full of energy/ambition to do and learn, being at the NYCDOE might not be a good place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leverage the folks who really want to create and sustain change. Get rid of the folks who are not doing anything and don't believe in the mission of improving education for all students.
