I have been working at New York Police Department

    Pros

Excellent benefits and pension. Was 20 and out, now I understand its 22 1/2 and out. you can still retire before the age of 50! Great place to BEGIN a Law enforcement career.

    Cons

Only join the NYPD if you want to write summons and be treated like a child by "Supervisors" and disrespected by the community. There is very little "Law Enforcement" unless you want to risk your career and life in narcotics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

if you have not worked in a busy house, respect those who do.

I worked at New York Police Department

    Pros

    Promotion by exam
    Excellent Benefits
Possibility to make as much overtime as you'd like
Everyday is different, no such thing as routine

    Cons

    Poor work/life balance
You can be forced to work overtime on your days off with little notice
Hours can be changed on a whim without regard to your personal life/family situation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is doing a fine job. Running an organization as large as the NYPD is a difficult tasks and the cons that I have listed are somewhat of a necessary evil.

I worked at New York Police Department

    Pros

Regular officers treat civilians very well, the higher up you go in the food chain the worst you are treated. DC37 is a joke when it comes to protecting your rights.

    Cons

Definite racial differences, it is sad that it took working here to be treated badly based on my race.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Civilians are just as important as the Uniformed members of the department.

I have been working at New York Police Department

    Pros

the police department has great benefits packages.the also have ample overtime.another bonus is that they count you military time toward your pension and have a 20 yr retirement. after this you can move on to another career if you chose to.

    Cons

The nypd has a disrespectful chain of command. aside from that, your tours of duty can be changed and you can be assigned a work location without notice. This means that you can work in staten island on monday and when you report for duty on tuesday, they can notify you that you no longer work there and you must report to staten island for future tours of duty.apart from constantly disrespected, the pay is terrible. the pay is terrible and then they tell you trhat you can't live out of new york city, rockland, suffolk westchester, orange and nassau counties. how can you afford to live comfortably in either of these places on you tiny salary. ok so your command gives you a hard time, now you have to worry about the public and get a hard time from them too.neither of the two care about your family. i guess if they wanted you to have a family, they would have given you one!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

mutual respect for all members of the service. better pay. boost moral. appreciation of family
