    Undervalued by everyone

    Library Technical Assistant (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThe best reasons to work here are the amount of vacation and sick days that are available and camaraderie with coworkers although it's based on complaints.

ConsSo many. Working with the public is exhausting. They hire information assistants to do librarians' work for half the pay.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more librarians. Test new catalogs and software before launching them. Provide tuition assistance for those working part time.

    Got fired Over Gossip

    Senior Page (Former Employee)
    Staten Island, NY

Pros-some of the coworkers are amazing, and depending who the managing librarian is, you MIGHT be treated with respect. flexible schedule for students. holidays off!

Cons-gossip is the biggest problem in the NYPL. along with that if you are a student and working as a page, the library can fire you for any reason no matter what. because we are not protected by the union and we have no right to defend ourselves. if you are a student stay far away from being a page. you will receive no respect or appreciation for the work you do. Human Resources department is the worse people to work with and take "care" of you.

Advice to Senior Managementgive pages the right to have a union rep, and benefits and vacation. We already work for a condescending position the least you can do is help us gain respect. Too many students get fired just to cover the library's image. And when you change the libraries old ways get rid of the librarians who refuse to accept the change and treat people with no respect. this company needs a lot of help, first in giving everyone equal rights, better pay, better vacation time, and hire more people for help.

Shelve and organize books, messenger duties

    Page (Former Employee)
    Bronx, NY

ProsFlexible. Pretty good pay. Easy job.

ConsLittle respect to lower staff such as clerks and pages. The environment can be stressful and down right uncomfortable dependent upon the branch you are located in.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your lower staff like actual people. Keep in mind, this isn't a career many are leading. This is only a job that can be easily repalced with an actual opportunity. The job the lower staff does is something that should be respected and awarded accordingly.

    Stuck in the past

Librarian, Young Adult Services (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsYou won't have to take your work home with you. You get to work with the public and help people find information. If you get assigned to a decent branch, you may be involved in some interesting programs, but many branches seem stagnant.

ConsIt's like working for DMV. Many of the senior staff have been there for 15 years or more and the sense of burn-out is palpable. People are promoted based on longevity rather than merit. While many public libraries have been invigorated by the role of technology in information seeking, NYPL feels bogged down by bureaucracy and overwhelmed by a changing society.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire and promote based on merit, rather than ability to slog into work day after day for fifteen years.
