I have been working at New York Public Library full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The New York Public Library offers great experience in a wide variety of fields. Its not just library science. In my ten years at the library I have gained expert experience audio/visual equipment, customer service and management.

    Cons

Some of the challenges working at the library one must remember it is a non-profit institution that relies on outside sources for funding. Budgets are tight as are salaries.

I worked at New York Public Library as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

The knowledge that you're working for an iconic cultural and educational institution in NYC, with an incredible collection you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. I was able to attend meetings and presentations to learn about the latest developments in technical services. NYPL is great about allowing you time off for professional development.

    Cons

Position was rather lonely--people in my department didn't seem to interact much throughout the day. Building was super-cold. Supervisor sometimes lacking in guidance and oversight for my work.

I have been working at New York Public Library part-time for more than a year

    Pros

A great place to work and improve customer service skills within a non-sales role.

    Cons

Can be a bit slow-paced. Depending on the environment and location, you might have to deal with a few sketchy patrons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your employees more and become more vocal and active in local communities about all the values of public libraries as a social good.

I have been working at New York Public Library part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The NYPL attracts very good people. Everyone I have met believes in public service and in helping people learn. I feel good when I leave work.

    Cons

I don't feel like there is much room for growth (some other jobs perhaps there is) and the pay is low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to create more opportunities for people to grow within the company. Retention could be a problem you're not paying enough attention to.

I worked at New York Public Library

    Pros

This is a tremendous organization with a compelling mission. The opportunity to work for The New York Public Library is valuable--you will gain priceless experience in a top-notch library system, free and high-quality continuing professional education, and the opportunity to serve a diverse community.

    Cons

Downsides: The pay is so low as to be nearly untenable if living anywhere outside of Queens, and management is very rigid, if respectful and fair.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less-than-transparent management decisions of a major nature have made many staff members wary of the way senior management has handled organizational changes and operations in recent times. Greater transparency and active solicitation of staff involvement in such institutional changes and decisions might yield higher staff satisfaction and a greater level of collective investment in the long-term mission of the library.

I have been working at New York Public Library

    Pros

Its prestigious to say that you have worked for the New York Public Library, only a thirty five hour work week, many branches so it is easy to find a better fit, good benefits, there are a lot of different types of training that is offered, part of an union

    Cons

the salary is low compared to other big city libraries, there have been a lot of changes recently without a lot of informing the staff, positions are being eliminated or changed, managers are being forced to reapply for their jobs, some librarys are not located in the best areas, having to work Saturdays and nights,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To inform staff more about changes
