I worked for 3 months and only worked maybe 60 hours.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at New York & Company

ProsDiscounts are ok, easy job, nice clientele, management was very good in the store I worked in. They communicated with staff perfectly, and ran a great store. My only complaint was the lack of hours. Don't keep hiring people if there aren't enough hours to go around.

ConsON CALL SHIFTS. I only know a few occupations that do on call shifts, and most of them are in hospitals. They are awful. No guaranteed hours. Difficult to sell the NYC credit cards, clientele is older women. Coupons were also hard to explain because there are a lot of exclusions, but that is true of any retail.

Okay company to work for

Sales Associate/Key Holder (Current Employee)
Monroe, LA

I have been working at New York & Company part-time for more than a year

ProsManagers are great to work with

ConsNo hours, (depending on prior week's transactions)

Advice to Senior ManagementNo change in company. Same old same old expectations with sales, policies, and procedures. Pay is minimum wage and you work your butt off towards an unrealistic goal.
Customers complain about cheaply made material and jewelry.

It could be worse

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Overland Park, KS

I have been working at New York & Company part-time for more than a year

ProsThe discount on clothes is a major perk. For the most part, it is a fun job where you can help people while learning different sales techniques and computer systems.

ConsIt's customer service, so people can be rude and degrading to you. Unfortunately, there is really nothing you can do about it because the "customer is always right." Also, the company keeps adding more and more responsibilities on the staff without adequate incentive (raises, bonuses, fun prizes).

I worked at New York & Company

ProsClothing discount, flexible schedule for students, great way to build professional wardrobe on a discount, management was actually pretty awesome though

ConsThey push their credit card way to hard. You have to sell sell sell that card to even be able to work the register. Dress code is way to specific, you can't wear clothes once they hit the sales rack. Reduced hours if you are not successful at selling credit card. Pretty much what was bad about this job was what "corporate" wanted and the rules they imposed.

Was offered a part time position after the holidays as a seasonal sales

Sales Associate (Current Employee)

I have been working at New York & Company part-time for less than a year

ProsManagers are nice, schedules are flexible for college students, always something to do, paid weekly

ConsNot enough hours given in a week, sometimes they do not need you at all for the day, on calls are a pain.

Advice to Senior ManagementCoupons are confusing to customers and sales associates. Sometimes this causes problems for the transaction and the shopping experience. Also signing up for the credit card for customers is time consuming for them.

Overall a okay place to work.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Columbia, MO

I worked at New York & Company part-time for more than a year

ProsManagers were mostly friendly at both of the locations I worked at. Employees get good discounts. I was a Fashion Merchandising student at the time and they would always offer to let me work after hours setting up visual displays, which gave me good experience.

ConsThey really pushed getting people to sign up for the NY&Co. credit card, which is understandable but if you did not meet the minimum the managers had to have a "talk" with you on a regular basis. That is fine if you work a lot of hours but at one point I would only work very slow shifts on sunday nights and monday nights and I started to constantly get reprimanded for not getting sign ups. Some nights I would barely check out 5 people and half would have a card. In the end I was tired of not getting enough hours due to over hiring and tired of getting reprimanded for not getting card sign-ups. I only worked 1-2 slow shifts a week (some not even a regular 4 hours).

A good place to work

Manager Support Associate (Former Employee)

I worked at New York & Company part-time for more than a year

ProsFlexible with schedule if you're a student, straightforward, good place to earn experience if you've not had a job before, good communication (Manager Minute - something my current workplace does not have), you develop a relationship with regular customers

ConsThey do push the credit card, and sometimes, the customer clientele isn't friendly, especially since most people don't read the fine print on coupons

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't be threatening with the Credit Card. Be more motivational than competition-fostering.

Not a good retailer for family/work life balance

Assistant Store Manager (Former Employee)
Sacramento, CA

I worked at New York & Company full-time for more than a year

ProsGood place for new managers to get experience. Lots of opportunities for growth for sales associates to move up into management .

ConsToo many overnight floor-sets. Regional management does not support their managers that have families. Not enough hours given for floor coverage so customer service suffers.

Advice to Senior ManagementHigher management needs to support all levels of store staff, not just the store manager.
