    Pros

everyone has an office, and they have half day fridays

    Cons

they want loyal employees, but they don't want to be loyal to those employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

be honest and quit lying to your employees, the "we are a family mentality ' is only if it benefits them and the employees are left out in the rain.

I worked at Newfield Exploration full-time

    Pros

Flexible work hours. Good vacation time. Personal offices.

    Cons

Extremely high turnover rate. I have seen hapless junior employees left floundering then fired. Many of the positive reviews here are from people in commercial functions (HR, IT, Accounting etc) who have no clue how the oil & gas industry actually works.
The company is transitioning to entirely unconventional assets; asset portfolio is not diversified. The company is hedging all bets on unconventional plays but has not come up with any new areas to work, yet is not willing to make full use of assets the company already owns. They came in too late in the game for the Marcellus shale, etc.
Company seems to be downsizing and losing experienced staff - they recently sent out company-wide retrenchment packages. Low stock price makes company liable to be bought out. Management afraid to take risks but exploration is by nature a risky business. There is no real company culture with the high turnover rates, and whether or not someone is a 'fit' for the company is just an excuse for management to fire employees they dislike.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your scientists and engineers, not your stockholders and bean counters.

I worked at Newfield Exploration as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

HR took care of us very well and information was communicated effectively throughout the company

    Cons

Felt like I was not welcome to "be myself," but I guess that goes without saying if you're working in this industry! Coworkers weren't difficult to work with but once we stepped out of the office, there was nothing more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Newfield Exploration full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

local IT team is excellent, the newfield veterans all have a great attitude.

    Cons

Many of the long-time newfield employees are leaving because the culture is changing. IT = second class citizen. The culture of each team varies between office, can be drastically different.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trim the fat. They seem to be in the process of doing this.

Former Employee - Lease Operator in Myton, UT

    I worked at Newfield Exploration

    Pros

Benefits are great. Co-Workers are very fun and good to work with. Low level Foreman are very knowledgeable and good to work with.

    Cons

New top level management is not good, Struggling to get a hold of how there employees feel. Treat employees very badly. Have to be in the right group to move up in the company. They don't base raises on performance it is based on how well they like you. Bonuses for the Newfield are horrible for the industry. Not a place that is good for low level employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees better. Split the bonuses up evenly. Lear how your employees feel about your company. Take a look at the leader running the Myton, UT office.

Newfield - compensation great for a few, current management lacks leadership and people skills.

Former Employee - Engineer in Houston, TX
Former Employee - Engineer in Houston, TX

    I worked at Newfield Exploration

    Pros

If you are considered a 'top-tier" performer, your total compensation will match or exceed that of most in industry.

    Cons

Performance is not always fairly assessed. Compensation is largely tied to performance, so overall compensation may end up below industry average if your manager gives you a poor review. Leadership opportunities at Newfield are given only to smart engineers, not individuals with leadership or people skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eliminate functional middle managers - they have no true signature authority and therefore cannot make decisions without senior management approval. Therefore, they are merely another layer of bureaucracy. Also, a company the size of Newfield cannot afford to be as risk-averse as management is - in order to continue growing, the company must be willing to invest in high-potential opportunities, even when there is uncertainty.
