    Pros

9/80 schedule, pay good (due their desperation to keep you), good location.good stepping stone.

    Cons

Too many mid-level managers swinging around their political weight and far removed from the actual work. No support from HR director or Office management team. I watched 80% of the staff here slowly exit throughout my 5 year tenure. I was an excellent employee who started as a temp and moved my way up to a permanent position and three promotions before I realized this was no more than a few stepping stones toward a better career.Office morale in Houston is terrible; no one liked working here and it showed.

    Advice to Management

Practice what you preach. Get rid of dead weight middle managers. Stop the nepotism/favoritism and hold managers accountable for their shortcomings.

    I worked at Nexen full-time

    Pros

Competitive salary, compressed work schedule, health insurance, savings and pension plan.

    Cons

Totally a different company since it was acquired by Chinese owned entity. All networking, and social events were cut-off due to an unreasonable cost reduction goal. All senior employees either have since retired within the first transitional year, leaving all the rest of employees to slowly quit while contractors were quietly terminated. In the recent massive lay-offs, employee seniority and loyalty towards the company was not appreciated and those that remain have been reassigned without consultation to existing operating projects. It was indeed a toxic working environment, were your work was not valued at all by your superiors!

    Advice to Management

Good luck hiring competent work force once the industry picks-up....

I have been working at Nexen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Laid back atmosphere, great work schedule (Monday-Thursday), great pay (for a company that doesn't make much money!), car pool is great compared to bussing

    Cons

No training, no accountability, uneducated and unprofessional management, poor planning, weak leadership, cannot retain good employees, reactive not preventative, too many "retirees"

    Advice to Management

Time to spend the money and bring in real leaders from other companies.

    Pros

There is a great deal of work to be done Genuinely nice people Business units (other than IT) genuinely happy Much more opportunity for meaningful work for IT employees

    Cons

Fundamental misunderstanding of technology/architecture Heavy reliance on Gartner reports Get it done at all costs mentality in many cases Not meaningful or challenging work for senior contractors

    Advice to Management

Bring in senior people from other environments to help craft a longer term view

    Pros

Compensation is good and everything else sucks.

    Cons

No respect for human rights and freedoms. They will kick you out regardless of performance because of political games and greediness of people who are there for long time. They would ignore abuse toward other people. Even good compensation is not worth amount of frustration you have to go through. I'm very glad I'm out from there !!!

    Advice to Management

Respect for basic human rights. Shame on this company and it's management.
