I worked at Next Retail full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

There is very little in terms of positives. The only thing I would say is that perhaps if you are at College or something looking for part-time hours, it's a good way to get a taste of the lower end of the job market.

    Cons

A typical day at Next will consist of mind-numbingly menial tasks such as putting out endless pairs of jeans, followed by being moaned at by your 17 year old line manager for not putting them out in precisely the correct manner. Luckily you won't get too much of this from the senior management, as they rarely ever show their faces on the shop floor, I imagine they consider themselves far too important for such trivial matters.

If you do decide to work for Next then you'd better not make any plans outside of work...ever. They seem to change your work rota on a daily basis, in one instance my shift was changed a matter of hours before I was due to be in. Also, be prepared for baffling and draconian rules, such as not using the escalator to get to the stock room, I guess that returning out of breath 15 minutes later with a customer's item is more professional than using an escalator, who knew?

As for the famous staff discount, I was told I would have to wait about a month for it. Furthermore, if you are full time your 'allowance' is about £200 (Approx) with 75% off, this means you still have to cough up £50 of your own money for uniform, which is no small sum when you are on Next wages; more commonly known as minimum wage. Avoid this place like the plague, even for a low paid job they are an incredibly poor employer.

I worked at Next Retail part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Good staff discount good customer service generous uniform discount some new staff nice good product range

    Cons

Well what can I say possibly the worse place I've ever worked did 8 weeks on a temp 6 hour contract and believe me the experience was not nice!
Training minimal you get someone saying I will show you the till it gets busy and your left on your own
The employee learning portal hardly ever works from home
The temp staff are bossed around by the permanent staff you get all the rubbish jobs while they stand round chatting
If you ask for help because you don't know you get abuse you should know this have they not shown you etc etc
The stockroom staff are bully's getting the women to do all the hard jobs like ripping open boxes while they put clothes on hangers
The performance review well you only got two stars because you were off sick so we will punish you by not offering you any extra shifts
The managers delegate and do next to nothing
The stock room is a mess with a filing system that doesn't work for anyone
There are no breaks if your on a 4 hour shifts try workung four hours with no water it defys mazlows basic levels sorry for that doing a degree
And if you dare to go toilet you are slated for leaving your staff members either that or they say to you as you going in toilet is your shift over!
You can be serving a big queue next thing that happens someone will shout at you tidy this till up put that stick out before you have chance to catch your breath
There is no organisation you can be on menswear quite happy working then it's get to children's wear we are busy you get there they aren't busy its lazy full time permanent staff saying get that stock out
All in all if you want to be treated like dirt and be prepared to get all the rotten jobs and treated like a skivvy and spoke to like dirt work for next !!!

I worked at Next Retail full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Plenty of hours around Christmas and summertime. Good discount and uniform allowance. Career progression but always kept on temp contacts.

    Cons

Store managers don't look at holiday requests; you basically have to beg them to do their job and look at them; usually declined anyway so it is impossible to plan any holidays or have a social life. Absolutely no focus on staff and a horrible bullying atmosphere in store. Your entire day was depicted by the mood of your store manager that day. Expected to work all bank holidays and over Christmas which is understandable as it is busy, but the managers take it out on their staff that they also have to so it becomes a horrible environment. Our Store manager sat in the office all day long even leaving to get her hair done during her shift which meant the rest of the staff were buckled with the workload as she did nothing. Training which was supposed to be implemented in store never was, and stockroom staff actually had to call in environmental health as their working conditions were a disgrace (30 degree heat in stockroom when they arrived) I worked for this company from an xmas temp up to a full time sales manager and after 8 years was still on a temp contract; having to do basically all the other managers work as they were too comfortable with their permanent positions. The most enjoyable part was the relief of leaving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your store managers out of the office and sweating on the floor and stockroom like the rest of us. They sit on the phone, leave the store and treat staff like dirt, to the extent they are afraid to speak up. Do more surprise visits with area managers and you will catch them out. Instead of always asking for people focus feedback from your asm and store manager use the portal to email the temps and part timer's, then you will get honest feedback.

I worked at Next Retail part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

20% discount for myself and family. Some friendly colleagues and often keep Christmas temps on

    Cons

Only started with a 4 hour contract which was later changed to 3. Rude, nasty staff and badly managed by a manager that was later sacked. Not much chance to progress away from stockroom assistant. Everyone in their own cliques. Horrendous sale periods especially summer and Christmas with a lot of theft and angry, stressed customers. No time allowed off and often people approaching 18 were told their contracts ran out so they didn't have to pay more. Soul destroying.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow staff to put across ideas and give them a chance to progress. Notice peoples efforts instead of shunning them to one side. Offer till training to each staff member and don't accept bullying.

    Pros

    Erm.... Discount for uniform, discounts

    Cons

Awful company to work for. Glad I left. After 6 years you would think they would treat you as a valuable member or stff but no. If I didn't hand my notice in I would of been fired FOR BEING SIGNED OFF!!!!!! (Assistant store manga get even told me that) despite my doctors note.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Would seriously consider treating staff better. More praise instead of having so much negativity.
Staff that have been signed off, for good reason too, you might want to help and understand where they are coming from and be a bit more passionate not to drive them away and hand their notice in.

I worked at Next Retail part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

You're always guarenteed atleast 4 hours a week, and get a good store discount.

    Cons

Very disrespectful, I got no appreciation for what I did. The management was terrible. I got given hours last minute, without any pre-warning. I never got given the hours I was contracted for. I also got given hours, that I had previously stated 3 times, I could not work. I was made to work in environments that should not be permitted due to health and safety legislations. I was made to work after I had teeth taken out and was in pain. I was getting shouted at for issues that weren't my fault, but the fault of the staff from the previous day/shift. I finished my training on my last day of working. And finally, I was given my contract to sign 2 weeks before it ended.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect your staff, and don't make them feel 3 feet tall. Pre-warn staff on hours given and don't change them last minute. Ensure the training process is carried out appropriately and quickly. Organise yourselves better. Provide more opportunities for those who work hard and those wishing to excel within the business.

I worked at Next Retail part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

They give good staff discount and uniform allowance. Booking time off and contracts were good.

    Cons

I started when I was 17, I was therefore only ever considered as someone who was young with no aspirations of going higher. I hoped to work my way up into merit sales and did all the necessary requirements but a year later I was still waiting. Sale times are very stressful. Training is not very good and does not adequately prepare you. Manager showed no respect for staff and I was often left alone on the floor, leaving high security risks. Often spoken to in a rude manner. My contract day changed and I was not informed of it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Improve training.
Ensure respect is shown so that all members of staff feel valued.
Improve fairness and progression opportunities, for all ages.
