I worked at Nokia Networks full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The work is challenging with fairly up to date technology
The engineers are excellent and very experienced
The compensation and benefits are very competitive

    Cons

There is very little US based executive management.
There have been constant layoffs both under Motorola and Nokia mostly due to off-shoring.
Decision making at the executive level seems to be slow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The executive management says they value the quality of the previous Motorola products, but they don't value the experience of the engineers that built the quality products.

Former Employee - Senior Testing Engineer in Boca Raton, FL

I worked at Nokia Networks full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Most of the people are the best. Most managers I worked for would give you an assignment, tell you when it was expected and then let you go. They were there to help but did not micro-manage.

    Cons

In 2009 work started to move overseas. The overseas managers did not trust the U.S. workers. In the end development was moved overseas (after we trained the overseas workers) and Boca Raton, FL. site was closed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Till 2009 things were great. Then the desire to get less expensive labor took over. The upper management needed to trust local management more.

    Pros

They have great benefits and you can advance with some effort.

    Cons

Due to business type you need to be on the look out for layoffs. Just part of this type of organization.

Experience with employ degraded over time

    Former Employee - Principal Engineer
    Former Employee - Principal Engineer

I worked at Nokia Networks as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

The positives included a talented work force, sense of project ownership, interesting work, and current technologies. The employer was also competitive in terms of compensation.

    Cons

Lack of product strategy across multiple sites resulted in competing product development. This created a brain-drain of talent, overall waste of resources, and eventual demise of the site.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assign tactical and strategic direction per cost center.

    Pros

We had great teams, good middle management Leadership, consistent communication. Feedback and bonus system was clearly explained and rewarded.

    Cons

There was a lot of uncertainty that continued for some time. Old customers were not blended in with the NSN customers, leading to loss in business.

I worked at Nokia Networks full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Co-workers were great -- some of the smartest folks I've known. In my environment, at least, the schedules were flexible, telecommuting was allowed, and the benefits were pretty good.

    Cons

The pay was okay, but raises corporate-wide were small and scarce. Communication from upper-management was, as I saw it, a one-way street, and only the "good stuff" was communicated. If there was something less than stellar, I typically didn't hear about it until I read about it on some third-party web site. Everything seemed to be a secret.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open up. Be up front with employees about what's going on. Secrets breed fear, and fearful people sometimes don't do things in the best interests of the company.

    Pros

Business plans for Broadband and LTE in particular is good. Lots of good people working hard in these areas.

    Cons

Senior leadership does not understand the value of retaining key talent. Decisions based on cost sacrificing quality are made quite frequently.
