I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Friendly management, great compensation, amazing learning experience, looks great on your resume, training, there were a lot of department store meetings to amp up the environment

    Cons

long hours, commission sharks, mean coworkers, often times you would feel your morals are being conflicted with the return policy, for example, a group of teenagers came in to return merchandise that amounted up to $400, they were barely 16 but the as the return policy permits...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to management would hire staff that they are confident would be reliable. There were many girls coming and going because they hadn't had previous experience.

    I worked at Nordstrom full-time

    Pros

It's fun when you are working with individuals who help you in finding your selling style. Once you find what works for you the reward of your hard work and your paycheck makes it all better.

    Cons

The employees can be VERY catty and childish. You get pushed to continuously call customers to attempt to get them in the store on slow days and during snow storms. What's the logic in that?! Some people are very unethical and will steal your customers and claim them as their own if you're not careful. Also you are REQUIRED to work EVERY WEEKEND. Also they don't announce the store is closing until 15-20minutes after the closing time because they are money hungry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You do not need to schedule 20 people to work everyday. It would be wise to enforce instead of having to work every weekend, how about every other weekend. People do have lives outside of the company.

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Employee benefits (i.e. health, employee discount)
    - Schedule Flexibility
    - Fun working environment
    - Decent pay

    Cons

There are definitely opportunities for career advancement, but there can be many obstacles and "hoops" to jump through first. During my employment, I have witnessed hardworking associates be looked over for a management position for an associate who "looked the part".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should be a bit more supportive in assisting employees who are working to advance.

    Pros

Good pay (commision-based) and some benefits. Good job for college if you can stay part time.

    Cons

Very competitive and sales sometimes stolen by other salespeople, not many incentives if one does not want to enter management or corporate.

  10. Actually one of the best retail jobs I've ever had

Former Employee - Beauty Sales Associate in Oakbrook Terrace, IL

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Great discount for store & Nordstrom Rack
    Great new product training incentives
    Extensive product training
    Great health insurance
    Great location
    Fun store events
    Customer satisfaction driven

Promotions/Growth - I have seen so many people get promoted to a new position or a management level position, it's great to see that it happens often.

    Cons

There is a lot of pressure on your sales. It's VERY nerve racking to not have great numbers & have management monitor your numbers on a weekly basis. Not sure how it is at every department, but in the beauty department they have a 3 strike rule if your numbers are consistently low........

You never have your weekends, it's hard to have a whole weekend off not unless you request off in advance...... If you are newer it's harder for you to request a day or 2 on the weekend..

Although the beauty events are truly fun, if you do not make your numbers the managers may have a 1 on 1 with you & write you up.... Even if you tried your hardest or if you are newer to the company you still get written up.

The CATI-NESS is a pain in the neck.... It's expected working with 50-90 other women in 1 department & happens on a daily basis. I did meet a lot of great people in this department but there are a good handful of awful women here. It's quite sad to see older women back-stab, connive, steal your sale & lie to your face. The fragrance department is the worse with the sharks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more team building activities with your employees, get to know them personally.

  11. Retail

Current Employee - Commissioned Sales Associate in Oak Brook, IL

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Working on people skills, you get to meet and learn about so many different type of people. Your employees really effects on how your day will be. Discount, and just an overall great environment to work in

    Cons

Return policy, it's the worst. For employees that is, the customer doesn't have to have a tag receipt or anything in order for them to return. It's usually worn or damaged when they return it, so we still get hit with the return.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change return policy to hit employees within 6 months maybe.
