I have been working at Norfolk Southern as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

They generally treat their employees well, and have great retirement benefits. They train you and have opportunities to move up in the company.

    Cons

They make you travel a ton, or at least can make you travel a lot. Plus the supervisors are on call 24/7 except for every other weekend. They make you work a ton and have a lot of BS to go through. Poor work-life balance. It seems like the longer employees are on the railroad, the unhappier they are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop micromanaging. Most people know what they're doing so you don't need to breath down their necks and check up on their work constantly.

I worked at Norfolk Southern full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Norfolk Southern is a great organization. I gained invaluable experience and knowledge about the freight rail industry, and had an AWESOME supervisor.

    Cons

Expect to be under paid by about $20K compare to other railroads for the same job. There is absolutely NO opportunity for growth and advancement at Norfolk Southern. Only lateral moves with minimal pay raise. Many in the HR Department are unqualified. and try to "wing it". I am EXTREMELY grateful for the opportunity that Norfolk Southern me, but I have no regrets in leaving. The experience helped me land my DREAM JOB.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote employees based on their merits and hard work.

I worked at Norfolk Southern full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Room for growth due to retirements and aging management workforce. Great benefits. Require a lot of time in operations jobs (trains run 24/7)

    Cons

Some very antiquated systems and processes making it difficult to stay motivated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on trying to fix the misalignment of top management and company strategy. Bureaucracy makes change impossible.

I worked at Norfolk Southern full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Meeting and working with people who were team players, and gaining a life long friendship with them. #NScoworkersarefriendsforlife

    Cons

Little or no training in the department, and never given a test, with scores to determine which skills employees are lacking. They will disqualify without notice, and tell you less than 1 hour that you are scheduled to work another shift.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When discipline your employees for errors; explain the way to prevent them or how to correct them, instead of wanting to fire someone. Remember the non-agreement employees have the chance to learn the agreement employees job, but the agreement employees are not given the chance to learn the job of the non-agreement, and how it relates to their job.

I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Very good Benefits package that includes pension (one that you may not live to enjoy), sustainability, flexibility (depends on the department), good management trainee program, and

    Cons

nepotism, nepotism, nepotism. Impossibly rude and disgustingly ill mannered managers are rewarded rather than disciplined. Manage through fear. NO work/life balance for most.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

How do you continuously develop great talents and allow them to slip through your fingers? Other organizations are enjoying the fruits of your labor. DO SOMETHING!
