I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great pay, benefits are ok.

    Cons

Transportation department folks live for the job. 80-100 hours a week for the Trainmasters is the rule rather than the exception. If your not in the boys club promotion is hard to come by. Operation performance has a negligible impact on promotability, but as long as you can show you handle rule violations your golden. No accountability, blame game is the way its played

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Its a service industry, worry about moving freight, less about cracking skulls.

I worked at Norfolk Southern as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

NS is a very secure company that has been a leader in the industry for years. The internship program pays pretty well, can range from any location on the east coast, and requires a lot of travel, but you get to see amazing production. I particularly was in the Bridge & Building department of MoW so I dealt with a lot of structural work, bridge inspection, and tie replacement.

They essentially want to train you to become a manager of a given territory.

    Cons

As far as being an intern, there wasn't much direction when it came to a daily agenda. My boss in particular was so occupied with his current projects, that he barely had time to really enlighten me on what exactly the job demanded. The intern program is also fairly new for this company, so they don't have all the bugs worked out just yet.

There aren't set hours for this job, you'll start work at 6am until.....

I have been working at Norfolk Southern as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Good amount of positive reinforcement, would be a great job if you needed to spend the summer studying for an LSAT, long lunches with free workout classes

    Cons

people don't like it-was told to get out while I can multiple times, very rarely had enough work to do so I was bored out of my mind for a majority of my time here,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

don't take on an intern if there isnt enough work to do. invest in the idea of flex hours
