A secure job, but am undervalued for my education and experience.

Administrative Assistant (Current Employee)
Boston, MA

I have been working at Northeastern University full-time for more than a year

ProsThe benefits are very good and are generally what attract people towards working in higher education. Depending on where in the university you work, there may be other benefits.

ConsThere is a lack of professional growth opportunities, and the university doesn't really invest in its employees. We are undervalued for our education and experiences, which is interesting considering the university prides itself in producing employable students with their degrees. NEU would be very unhappy if their students ended up in jobs with salaries similar to what it offers its employees.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Fast-paced but a lot of layers

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Northeastern University

ProsGet to try out a many different marketing initiatives and utilize the last marketing automation systems on the market. There are definitely great people that work here.

ConsVery hard to grow from within because promotional opportunities aren't available, making the organization very top heavy. This also makes the approval process difficult when trying out new initiatives

Teaching Assistant (Current Employee)
Boston, MA

I have been working at Northeastern University part-time for less than a year

ProsLocation
Sense of Community
Not difficult work

ConsYou don't get paid nearly enough for the hours you put in.
My department said a TA was approximately 20 hours. However to be an effective TA, you need to put more than 20 hours in a week.
Time Consuming
Dealing with people who aren't appreciate of the work and hours you put in

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more TAs or pay current TAs more.

Great School for Undergraduate Studies

Graduate Research Assistant (Current Employee)
Boston, MA

I have been working at Northeastern University part-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat professors, great campus, great people

ConsVery boring and uncomfortable Lab spaces, Out dated courses available to take at each semester (for graduate students)

Advice to Senior ManagementMake the Laboratories more advanced and with a better environment. Laboratory is the first home! A graduate student is normally spends more time in the Lab than home! Therefore, the place should have all the comfort and entertainment values while being a sophisticated research place.

Lots of freedom to perform in role, but no direction, guidance, or recognition (College of Professional Studies)

Associate Director (Former Employee)

I worked at Northeastern University full-time

ProsChance to gain experience in many different areas. Truly work across all aspects of higher ed. admin

ConsUpper management no longer wants employees to think independently. Goal is to have low-level drones supervised by faculty.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet people do the job you hired them to do. Faculty have no interest in managing the programs, don't expect them to fill that role.

Big university with its share of problems

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Northeastern University

ProsNortheastern's commitment to safety, aesthetics and ergonomics at its premises is promising. Offices, even cubicles are designed in a fashion so as to not choke you out during your work hours.

ConsThe so-called NU shuffle affects the regular staff as well. There is a lot of running back and forth where employees at an administrative level will just turn you away or give you the cold shoulder.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe Northeastern HR should really focus on making its staff, specially at SFS more congenial and smile prone. Trying to work with this office makes me feel like visiting the DMV all over again.

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
