    Very poor management and merchandising

Sales Representative (Former Employee) Jacksonville, FL

ProsGood benefits. A decent place to work for the first few months then the new store manager got there and after that it was all down hill.

ConsPoor pay. More junk than tools. Selling SPP above & beyond doing anything else of to the point of losing your job. Poorest store manager in the country.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry hiring a store manager that doesn't make a new hire ready to quit after the first week. Also having one that doesn't make customers mad on an almost daily basis and not firing an ASM that customers actually like and come back to see would be a tremendous help. FYI I was employed for 5+ years so I did notice a few things. Unfortunately in the USA a manager is a dictator because you can say nothing negative towards one or else.

Northern Tool's is a difficult place to work with no opportunities to grow at there Manufacturing Facility.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Faribault, MN

ProsThey offered great opportunities for a work-life balance with half days every other Friday. There is a diverse array of products that come out of that facility.

ConsThere is no opportunity for advancement. Most individuals who have been there have been in the same position for 5+ years.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on improving opportunities and growing employee knowledge.

    not trustworthy

Loader (Former Employee) Fort Mill, SC

Prosvery affliated with having fun with workers for there hard work.

Conschallenged to the maximum for hard work that is brought upon yourself from heavy lifting.

Advice to Senior Managementmake work easier for workers who are keeping the company standing and give workers a chance to be hired again after termination.

If there was a zero it wouldn't even deserve that!

    Merchandiser (Current Employee)

ProsLets see I can only think of one pro and that is the hours.

ConsThis is the worst job you will ever have in your entire life. If you want to get paid less to do all the work. Managers don't know how to do anything and just complain about doing anything at all, they just sit in the office all day and talk. You do all the work, which is another thing, they just swamp you with work. Constant Planogram changes and trucks never ends. when you have only 2 people braking down and putting away truck and changing the store around you never have time to stock or clean up. They pay the sales people more than the merchandisers and the sales people just stand around all day. Then when you have a day off the sales people create more work for you by not knowing where anything goes or selling displays with box stock available. The people at coorperate are so clueless or anything sending trucks the day before audits of same days as inventory. Or the 'ordering' What a joke that is they put things on sale and send you a bazillion of something that sits around and then they send hardly any of what people want! Some days you spend half your day appoligizing to customers for being out of product. And From what i hear the managers get money for buying lunch each month Yea How bout 1 time a year you get a free lunch!! Then you get 1 review a year and the dont even really review your job, and what they do review of your job they just say you did ok! so they don't have to go the extra mile to get you 50 cents!! Yea thats right 25 cents a year raise!! That is pretty sad! When coorperate sends out like 4 flyers a year about all the parties they have there!! What a crappy place to work!

    HORRORS!!

    Management (Current Employee)

    ProsSalary for managers is adequate

ConsLow paid workers, managers who care about nothing but butt-smooching their superiors, Store Mangers who play favorites, rampant sexual harassment without ANY consequences, Regionals who are clueless as to what happens in the stores, and managers who work ONLY 6am til 2pm and have no idea what goes on with the business. Assistant managers are required to do everything in the store to make the manager look good and never get one iota of credit! Cashiers have to have a manager sign off even for an even exchange or return of a 99 cent item! NOT a family friendly atmosphere as they constantly say in interviews....you NEVER see your family with this company. Your PTO disappears when you request a regular day off.....managers arbitrarily use up your time without your permission.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit making announced visits....regionals and managers are in cahoots to MAKE you think everything is running smoothly. Managers start working what the SOP calls for one night per week and one weekend per month!

Horrible and lazy management. Always passing the buck and never fixing problems.

    Employee (Current Employee) Charleston, SC

ProsA few decent people here and there. Work and home life pretty fair most of the time. That's about it

ConsPretty much everything, horrible pay, shitty raises, awful management from store and corporate levels. Breaks non existent, like pulling teeth to get your OWN paid vacation days.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees run this store, maybe you should start listening to those people instead of doing nothing.

    Run away From This Company

    Assistant Manager (Current Employee)

ProsHours for retail management is great, usually not over 45 hours.
Other than that it pays the bills. The hours required is the biggest plus.

ConsThe company is very unprofessional. This includes upper management and HR. It is a company where unless you are the store manager the ASM will very seldom speak to you or the other employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnload the upper management and dead weight lower management and bring in professional managers.

Assistant Store Manager - What a complete let down

    Assistant Store Manager (Current Employee)

ProsYou get a paycheck and amazingly hard to find local benefits!?!?

ConsThe head honcos in corporate don't give a rat's ass about the individual employees who allow them to make an ok living so they can only be available during bankers hours. On the retail end of it, if you're lucky enough to get unfairly(out of pure desperation) promoted to store manager, you get to take weekends off, work very few hours, and rely on your assistants to work double shifts.

Advice to Senior ManagementGrow some balls, except some responsibility, and take action! Give your sales people a reason to keep selling and force your store managers to show up and, I don't know, manage their stores.

    An extremely TOXIC work environment

    N/A (Former Employee) Burnsville, MN

ProsA paycheck / and medical benefits though not the best in the world. . .

ConsEveryone has a personal agenda to become the great butt in charge. Throw you under the bus is the best example of how day to day work is at Northern. Family owned and claim to be so oriented don't believe it a lie. Spare yourself the misery of working for them. Spent 7 years working there gave over an extra 1 - 2 months a year in overtime and on call. Love to work you to death stay away from this company.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of management who prefers suck ups rather than those who actual does the wry.

Avoid this IT Department if you are a Senior RPG Software Developer.

Senior RPG Software Developer (Former Employee) Burnsville, MN

ProsIf you consider a paycheck a Pro...then this job is for you.

ConsManagers are over payed OLD RPG Programmers. If they do not like you...they will walk you out the door. This is a Sink or Swim shop...so swim at your own risk. Absolutely NO communication between management and subordinates. I went to ask a programmer a question one day and found out that they had quit over a month ago...are you kidding me?

Advice to Senior ManagementHire some REAL managers that have some people skills.
