    Pros

Northern Trust can be a great place to work because of work/life balance and company culture. Full time employees can enjoy a pension and a 401k.

    Cons

Northern Trust controls costs in a large part through lower than market compensation for employees. This leads to lower quality and unmotivated workers.

Northern Trust is plagued by bureaucracy an inefficiently. A lot of this inefficiency arises from redundant teams and outsourced staff. If a critical partner area is located in India with no counterpart or backup on regular hours, it is very difficult to get work done on the same day especially if it is of high importance.

Technology at Northern Trust is ancient. Main reporting platform for custody is under batch processing which makes it so even simple update/maintenance takes 1+ days. There is many software applications used which are not well designed and don't "speak" to each other. This leads to excessive work from employees to compensate for "systems limitations"

    Advice to Management

While it is good to aim for increasing ROE, this should not be done at the expense of employee pay and lack of investment. There should be more technology investment and planning. When new applications are released, don't just release it without any sort of support.

    Pros

People who work for Northern are truly hard-working and caring individuals. The pay is great as well.

    Cons

Not a lot of 'young' people. Typical corporate office layout. Too many internal database systems that do not share same data. And a lot of teams seem as though they could be absorbed into other teams.

    Pros

    Friendly and cooperative environment.

    Cons

The atmosphere at the firm is changing. Some of this is being brought on by tougher regulatory guidelines. Committees are involved in all business decisions.

    Pros

Some of the people (key word is SOME) were great to work with.
Convenient, nice location downtown Chicago to get to.

    Cons

Some of the management should not be in their position, and they know it.
Hire competent people, not those that say the right thing.
Get rid of those that have shown multiplet times they are not qualified to be in their position
Training was hit and miss. A favorite phrase was "read the manual, it is good enough" when normally it was outdated or unclear.
Group infighting was a regular causing some people to have to play messenger since unprofessional "partners" would not even talk to each other.

    Advice to Management

If you have a manager that has turned their department into a revolving door, maybe you should look at that manager, not turn a blind eye to the fact they are unqualified to lead.
Stop outsourcing everything to India because its cheaper. You get what you pay for. When you have people local complaining about it, maybe you should listen.
Invest more in actual training. Lack of training causes employees (permanent and contractor) to not care and to not be able to perform their duties.

    Pros

Stable company if you're looking for job security. There are a lot of great connections and great people. Work from flexibility depending upon the job.

    Cons

Pay is not competitive and a lot of minorities are overlooked for jobs and promotions. You have to note what you are doing so that you are recognized for your hard work.
