Former Employee - Manager in North Atlanta, GA

I worked at Northside Hospital full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The opportunities for education and training are plentiful and encouraged for all levels of staff. Managerial benefits were generous and appreciated. Constant growth and plans for the future infected the employees with optimism. During good economic times there is no better place to work in healthcare Atlanta market. Administration friendly and open to ideas. Terrific non-profit organization.

    Cons

As a non-profit, the economic recession of 2008 hit Northside hard and there were many rounds of layoffs for a two year period--through early 2011. Clinical staff was kept of course, but hundreds of long term employees including Directors and Managers in non-clinical roles lost their jobs. Positions were eliminated and those job duties spread to other existing lower paid staff members.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider business mgmt. internships for graduate students. Grow your HR dept to be more diverse. Continue to push training and education for all levels of staff for their growth and the continued growth of Northside system.

    Pros

NSH has a Good Reputation & it is ever growing. Have worked in NSH system previously. Close to home. Working with others living in your community & serving the people of your community. Hospital is nice & clean. High standards for employees. RN's in my area have to work together & depend on one another & always willing to help.

    Cons

Haven't found any yet. While no place is perfect I am very happy to be apart of NSH.

Former Employee - Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant Intern

I worked at Northside Hospital as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

I had a fantastic learning experience, the nurses went out of their way to help me and teach me. I used to think Doctors were angels, but after my internship, it has helped me realize that nurses are silent angels, helping everyone when they can.

    Cons

The program could be a bit better organized, and Northside's a great experience, but I feel they could have gone through a bit more trouble to organize the departmental programs.

I have been working at Northside Hospital

    Pros

The opportunities for advancement are great. The employees are friendly and willing to help others. Northside as a whole is involved in areas that allows the employees to partake in volunteering in various areas. They also give quarterly bonuses.

    Cons

Northside's time off is different from other companies, theirs is PTO (paid time off). However, it's nothing that they actually give you, you accure the time from time worked.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think they should at least give their employees the standard 9 to 10 holidays off with pay and not take the time back from your accured (PTO).

    Pros

Culture of growth and teamwork. Positive energy. I feel as if they truly try to hire the best. If the staff is happy the patients are happy!

    Cons

Not all units are as well run as mine, but changes happen constantly, and usually they are for the best.

    I worked at Northside Hospital

    Pros

Understands when you have a personal problem or illnesss.
Raises were great along with promotions.
Gave extras to employees besides money.
Insurance provided to employees was good.

    Cons

My only con was the distance I had to drive and that was my problem - not theirs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees when they have a complaint about another employee - sometimes they know more as to what is going on in the department than supervisor/coordinator/manager, etc.
