Extremely valuable learning experience; industry has a %14 retention rate in first 4 years for a reason.

    Financial Representative Intern (Current Employee)

ProsMost financially strong insurance company in the world with the best insurance products. Leadership is enthusiastic and extremely knowledgable in the products they sell. The sales training will benefit you forever regardless if you stay with the company or not and you will always know where insurance and long terms savings spent. You can be your own boss and create your own schedule when you are at the point where you have established a good clientele.

ConsIf you do not have a natural market (did not grow up in the area that you are working it) it will be much more difficult to have success in the first year or two . Also, do not expect to actually receive your weekly stipends. I'd say I've only gotten 50% of them even after mentioning it to upper management. If you are good at the job though, the $100 a week should not matter but it's still frustrating when your contract states that you are entitled to $100 a week.

    – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Financial Representative (Current Employee) Cleveland, OH

ProsLeadership for the intern program is very good. They really care about the success of their employees.

ConsI really have nothing to complain about. Base pay would be nice, but that's the nature of the job.

Advice to Senior ManagementPush your interns to pursue their true career ambitions even if they only exist outside of the company.

Northwestern Mutual is a great company to build a resume.

    Recruiter (Current Employee) Tampa, FL

ProsI love what the company does as a whole and the home office is amazing! The work they do is truly impressive.

ConsIt all comes down to the individual offices. Some offices are great to work for and the management team is great others.....not so much. The best offices are those run by individuals who are open minded and aren't suck in the 1960's.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake time to figure out the TRUE personalities of your MD's.

ProsEasy to get in, just prepare a presentation of how you will accumulate your potential customers.

ConsYou have to find your own clients. I think this is one of the marketing strategy of theirs, use the interns to spread the word about the company.

Sales internship review..or what they call a financial representative.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIf you want to sell insurance to people you know then this is a great job. However most people don't want to have to call people they know to try to sell them insurance. Good training and place to start if you want to do something with sales.

Cons100% commission based. So if you don't do well, you not going to be making much money. And if you do it still takes time to build up a decent client list.
