    A Great Place to Grow

Associate Financial Representative (Current Employee) Fort Wayne, IN

ProsNorthwestern Mutual's corporate structure is a great model for those who desire to progress within their field. The Home Office provides extensive sales tools to facilitate the proper sales techniques. The work'life balance is completely up to you, but there are many incentives to being a top representative.

ConsThe financial industry has a lot of moving parts. It's near impossible for anyone to know everything about insurance and investments. The con is not specific to Northwestern Mutual, but those who don't put in their time to learn about the new products and prcedures will be left behind.

Amazing Company and Products & Services

Financial Representative (Current Employee) Newport Beach, CA

ProsThe products and the services are top notch and it very much depends on the culture of the office. Some really amazing people and community involvement.

ConsCulture, culture, culture. If you have the right people around you and pushing you, you will make it. But you have to hold yourself accountable.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy office has really turned things around over the past year and I can't complain.

Great overall experience. Opportunity to have your hands in many facets of business.

    Development Officer (Current Employee)

ProsStrong culture and surrounded by hard workers. Great work environment.

ConsLimited opportunity for growth on the staff side. Needs to be the right time and right place.

Advice to Senior ManagementStrengthen the link between corporate and the field. Many pieces of the puzzle are disconnected, but the success of the overall company overshadows this.

Great bottom-up structure, very solid business model

Financial Representative (Current Employee) New York, NY

ProsLove the bottom-up structure. Leadership at all levels of the sales and management force are grown-up from the bottom. Everyone you're looking-up to has done it and, until the highest levels, is still conducting a successful practice themselves. Otherwise, Northwestern has a great reputation, is solid financially, sells great products, and does a lot to train and support its sales force.

ConsEarnings are weighted on the back end. 100% commission + residual incomes and other incentives become far more lucrative later in a career, making it tough to swim at the beginning. Best play is to be very focused and stay aggressive without losing integrity.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on developing talent and find a balance between production / productivity and human capital development.

    Solid Company with Great Values

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsTeam environment with a lot of focus on joint work for new reps. Great resources from the Home Offfice as well as technology and databases. The sky is the limit if you are willing to do the work it takes and the training programs spell everything out.

ConsLots of time time and effort in the beginning to start your practices. Need to be willing to look to other for help and guidance to make your business better.

    Financial Representative

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe training is superb and the ability to develop an integrated insurance and investments practice is unique in the industry. The income potential is limitless.

ConsYou truly are on your own. You have to source every client you acquire. While income potential is limitless, there is also no floor...which makes it difficult if you experience reversals or a couple stagnant months.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more quality and less quantity.

Great if your single or married without kids

    Financial Representative (Current Employee)

ProsAs a company the products they offer are amazing. The Home Office support is second to none. Northwestern Mutual is fantastic. If you want to be able to offer the absolute best financial planning products out there, then NM is the place to work. If you can't make it here, you will be hard pressed to work anywhere else, because you will always know there is something better.

    Cons100% Commission
    Great is never enough
You get stuck with who recruits you into the "Business"
Do this if the only thing you care about is money
Work-Life Balance does not exist for first 3 yrs.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf your going to require your Reps to get their Series 6/63 in the first year, then have a support system in place to help younger reps place business.

Very few veteran reps what to Joint Work for $50/mo Roth IRA. So now you have a young rep who is not following the compliance rules as well as they should.
