I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Northwestern Mutual gives you the tools to succeed and really lays the foundation for success for you to set up and run your own practice. The training, though brief, is in depth and easily applied. When it comes time to sit down with clients, representing the strongest financial services company in the industry really lends you credibility and can make your job easier simply because Northwestern Mutual has some of the best products on the market. The emphasis on joint work cases is really great and the other reps are usually very supportive and doing joint work will increase your knowledge base and exposure immediately.
Furthermore, at Northwestern you are given maximum flexibility over your schedule and hours. You are in essence running your own business, and the flexibility that comes with that is hard to match.

    Cons

As far as working for the company goes there are few downsides here. The work is challenging and rejection is a daily occurrence, but if this is the type of work you want to do then there is no better company to work for.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good (not great) benefit package including health, dental and optical insurance. 401k with match and cash value plan. If you don't mind the snow and cold. the greater Milwaukee area is a great place to live.

    Cons

Great pension plan was replaced by cash value plan which was disappointing but understandable. It is difficult to find a mentor within the company; however, that is changing.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual

    Pros

Flexibility, learning environment, best mentors/trainers in the industry, unlimited income potential, mobility between firms.

    Cons

High pressure for sales, the independence can be your downfall, if you are not comfortable with calling friends, family, and random people this is not for you, you need your own list to phone which is great, but can cause anxiety.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very collaborative workplace with extensive interaction with senior management. Broad work experience in all real estate product types and geographies. Both fixed income and equity investing provides exposure to JV development. Great work-life balance, benefits, and quality of life.

    Cons

Probably below industry-average compensation, however this is partially offset by great health and retirement benefits

You are 1099 and there are a lot of expenses that you have to pay that other companies would normally pay for you. you can make higher commissions elsewhere.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual

    Pros

There is a lot of flexibility with the job, although that can depend on your individual employer. I am able to take time off when needed. I also have a lot of say in the projects I work on. Great people to work with. Good company values. They care about you and your family.

    Cons

Not a lot of direction. Pay is usually commission but if it's hourly then you really don't make all that much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on reviews annually/semi-annually and increase pay

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

    $100/week stipend
    Ability to earn commission
Great working atmosphere from what I've experienced
Ability to make my own schedule
    Mentor that challenged
    Great business experience

    Cons

I did the internship for 2 semesters and loved it initially. I was doing really well in sales, had a great intenship mentor that worked very closely with me, and there were talks about becoming a full time representative. However, my feelings for a job in this career field started to change during the second semester. I just started to feel like my salary would be totally dependent on other people due to the commission pay. I wasn't 100% sure if that was how I wanted to start right out of college so I chose not to stay with the company.
