I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Company is very focused on their policyholders and doing the right thing for them. Experience can change from office to office since it is a general agency system, which can be a pro and a con.

    Cons

Since this is a general agency system field staff are not company employees and often times don't have very good healthcare benefits and in some cases no retirements plans in place.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

In this position you earn both unlimited freedom and unlimited income. Since you are largely paid based on your production, you have the ability to choose how you produce that production. Essentially you will earn an income through networking , which also makes this a great launchpad.

    Cons

You will be underpaid over/overworked your first five years, paid what you should the next five, and after that you're income will continually rise on its own due to residuals and trailing income, regardless of your production. The tough part is being completely self driven those first five years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers should focus heavily on branding their agency in the local community.

    Pros

    - Values long-term thinking (rare in business today)
    - Great work/life balance
    - Terrific company that values employees and is supportive of the greater Milwaukee community

    Cons

    - This is changing, but historically not a meritocratic culture, which can be frustrating.
    - Moving toward a "Straight Talk" culture, but again not a historical strength so will take time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The people you work with are great. The atmosphere within the company is outstanding. You work hard, but also play hard. The training you go through is second to none. You have the opportunity to work with the type of clients you desire and have the chance to control your salary.

    Cons

Work life balance can be difficult at times. The pay can be inconsistent due to you are paid on commission. The job is tough because you are essentially running your own business and are responsible of developing your own clientele.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The internship program should be more challenging.
