I have been working at Northwestern Mutual part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great atmosphere as a Financial Rep, much encouragement, great sales school to improve one's understanding

    Cons

takes time to get going as any commission based job does, can be intimidating at times due to the stress involved

    Advice to Management

they have done a great job in preparing interns for full time, could use a little more detailed of a process for interns going full time

    Pros

Great company with amazing culture. People really want you to be successful and are willing to help. The people are also very fun and passionate.

    Cons

Not much pay if you are not producing much. You can end up with a lot of red time if you do not have a lot of business.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Training on selling, prospecting, and learning about the products throughout the semester - Plenty of resources that you can use to learn about the company and the market - Gives you ample autonomy to build your own practice and decide where you want it to go - Performance rewards - Joint work allows you to bring a veteran rep to meet with potential clients and see how they interact - Brand recognition

    Cons

    - Virtually no base salary, majority commission-based compensation (most sales jobs) - Takes a few years to have a firm client base - Challenging to sell an idea (insurance) rather than a tangible product

    Advice to Management

Market the company's investment services more in order to get rid of the stigma that NMFN is solely an insurance company.

    Pros

Company had a good reputation, the work seemed to be scoped fairly - people were nice to deal with.

    Cons

Terminated before I stepped off the plane to arrive at work. Not that it was a bad situation just that I would rate it as unprofessional, and seems like no one is accountable for what happened.

    Advice to Management

Treat people professionally and fairly - so that you can be trusted better in business. This situation happened in IT - perhaps it wasn't a reflection of company, but the story needs to be told.

    Pros

Training is great, you learn a lot about the financial industry and insurance. You gain valuable interpersonal skills and the ability to talk to people on the phone. You can be very successful depending on how much effort you choose to put in.

    Cons

Pay is low (pretty much all commission based except for $100 weekly stipend). Largely based on network and connections so make sure you have 100+ people to call.

    Advice to Management

    Perhaps extend training further out

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as an intern

    Pros

The internship offers great training, expertise, and a good learning foundation for the insurance industry.

    Cons

While the training and inspiration is in place, clientele building can be tough or slow at times. But that comes with any sort of commission based job.

    Pros

The atmosphere is what I am looking for and the compensation seems reasonable for the amount of work put in.

    Cons

Unless you have strong market compensation can seem sketchy week to week.
