I worked at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Well, I made some money on the stock options.

    Cons

Played fast and loose with US labor laws. There's a reason they got slammed in court, and dropped from the Working Mother list.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lose the Euro-centric policies. The US is your biggest profit center. Make sure your US employees are treated accordingly. Stop requiring US-based employees to be in Switzerland on Thanksgiving. It's also obnoxious to sneer when US-based employees want to go home at a reasonable time......when they've been on conference calls all over the world since 5 AM. If McKinsey's going to run the place, just call it what it is, OK?

I have been working at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

When it was Sandoz, it was a fun place to work. The current culture really is toxic. One thing you can count on is that you will see many layoffs. However, certain people are untouchable. There used to be a pension, etc.

    Cons

Work life balance was non existent. There are many cons to Novartis. The Performance Evaluation process changes like the wind. If you are really good at creative writing, you will do well with the year end and mid year review.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In the last 4 years, you cut 4,000 sales people, with more cuts coming. You implemented a new "culture" 2 years ago that included white leather couches at the first management meeting. You hired a new division for a new psoriasis product and hired almost all from outside the company. A few people were hired from inside and were told it was a "Lateral move" with no raise, yet at the same time hire people from outside for much more money. Yet, upper management collects gross amounts of pay while cutting people and ruining lives. Sit back, take a look at what you created. You should be ashamed.

    Pros

used to be benefits, but not any longer

    Cons

micro management, lack of SOPs and process guidance. No integrity in the drug development process. Individual departments work like a CRO, trying to please their customers while violating SOPs, FDA guidelines and ICH.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

    Good products
    Decent pipeline
    Lots of paid time off

    Cons

Numerous sales managers guilty of bullying, emotional abuse, and sexual harassment.
Extensive sex discrimination--I got a lot of money out of the sexual discrimination lawsuit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire all the field sales managers and start over. Fire any manager who has received more than one complaint of bullying or harassment.

I have been working at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

None. Not one. Management is too busy giving employees the impression they really care about work/life balance then they tell people they cant work more then 1 day a week at home. Total BS. Nobody is friendly their. People walk around with grins on their faces. All the foreign people are not americanized and you cant even understand what they are saying half the time. They are hired because they get paid half of what americans would have to get paid. This is reflected in the type of people you have to work with on projects. I am talking about most Asians that are not US citizens.

    Cons

Terrible disjointed end of year review process that does not get done correclty and serve its purpose. Management often admits they need to work on a lot of internal issues. So why havnt they changed things?? They bust your b@ll$ and then will screw you in the end. The average employee does not want to account for their responsibilities and this screws up many project timelines and then people will play the blame game and point fingers and you will get a bad review - if people even submit a review you requested of them - most people don't bother because nobody gets glamorous reviews there. Expect to be average in your review as an employee and just go thru the motions of working there and following the same procesess year after year until you are fed up with the place and quit or get laid off. This is the last place in NJ anyone should want to work. Stay away from it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit your job and join the peace corp. You will learn more valuable life lessons then working here. Then maybe you will actually care about people. Reverse your true values because they are backwards. Treat people with respect. Remember what you learned in Kindergarden about people? Its all true.
