I worked at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary & benefits OK, but not keeping pace with industry. Continuous downsizing.

    Cons

Jobs being shed and outsourced, but individual responsibilities continuously increased. Non-technical managers making bad technical decisions. No accountability at top. Weak management of offshore vendors. You are a commodity and constantly reminded of it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop covering up your mistakes. Admit them, learn from them and improve you processes. Let the technical folks (who have hands-on experience) weigh in for better decision support.

    Pros

-You can slide, if you know how to hide, play politics, or both.
-Run like a bank; they can divest any business unit simply at any time
    -Jiminez is outstanding

    Cons

    -Politics
-Highly fragmented across geographies and divisions
-Benefits aren't that great, particularly in the US and for a healthcare company
-Women rule the US due to a 2010 gender bias settlement. Google it.
-Limited mobility. Lack of promotion or even lateral movement - you're pigeonholed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at the talents of your individual employees. Embrace change. Foster collaboration across boundaries and cultures.

I have been working at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Lots of perks, a lot of flexibility to work remotely and in regards to schedule.

    Cons

There is a huge lack of communication and cooperation between different functions and between management and employees. There is little openness to challenge of ideas and subject matter experts are usually disregarded. People work in silos, and the organization is hugely political.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider listening to your people more, you have a lot of very experienced knowledgable people that can contribute greatly to the business. People are passionate and feel valor ate when they are listened to and considered. Additionally, try to on board people better, a lot of teams, people is thrown to a position with no guidance what so ever and sometimes with not very welcoming teams.

    Pros

    Direct report management was great

    Cons

The upper management is either in denial or smoking something

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to "the front lines!" ((Sadly, this will never happen, rather it's easier to stay quiet, check Facebook & collect an unreasonably high salary to look busy while making no difference whatsoever. Thank God for R & D!

Toxic culture perpetuated from senior management down, constant box checking and micromanagement.

I worked at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Field based sales teams in many areas are exceptionally talented. In spite of toxic management, some great products, making their way to the patients because of exceptional field force. The goal of best in class patient services programs will be achieved, slowly, in spite of itself. Excellent benefits, salary, and diversity.

    Cons

Senior management issues are rampant throughout organization. Realignments and reorganizations are the norm. Culture of the organization is one that encourages shameless self promotion and working in silos. Collaboration and innovation frowned upon and often punished. Box checking/micromanagement from the highest levels down. Problem employees/managers protected and promoted. The disconnect between home office and field team is much larger then in other companies. Too many layers of management, lack of respect for the organization in many markets.

I have been working at Novartis Pharmaceuticals as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Good commute, non "upper" management level people were awesome, had a really good boss but unfortunately he could not handle the crazy dramatic inconceivable personalities around him

    Cons

Swear to god, i think there are some governments run better than Novartis Emeryville

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be realistic about goals and timelines. Don't just implement a system or change without good communication.
