I have been working at Novell full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are some very good people in this company. However, very few of them are in a position to make a difference.

    Cons

Terrible upper management. 10 years ago this company had a very strong moral compass, worked ethically and treated the employee as a valued asset. Now, the benefits are lousy, the policies are anti-employee and the ONLY focus is how to bilk a customer out of a dollar. Policies are re-written on the fly to make a sale. Workload is heavy as the company is stretched super thin at every position. There are customer-centric jobs here that are being done by one person, where at our competitors might be done by a team of 15-20 people. And every single year, the company loses more and more net business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Honestly, treat your people like they are your most important asset instead of interchangeable parts that can be replaced at will. Stop trying to screw your employees over with horrible policies and benefits that are simply dreadful.

    Pros

    There were really no pros

    Cons

Dying company with lack of cohesive vision and leadership. Continually look for ways to cheat sales people out of commission.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick to a strategy and do not jerk the people around. Pay sales people what they are worth so that you do not have the massive amounts of turnover that have been prevalent in the 2000's. Invest in a lead/demand generation staff and platform to drive inbound traffic for products and services

    I worked at Novell

    Pros

    Nice campus
    Nice cafeteria
    Nice exercise room
lots of time off, didn't need to beg for permission
good location next to free way
    excellent benefits

    Cons

Company was bought out by Attachmate, Attachmate laid off hundreds of employees
company can't compete and therefore is not growing
    moral is way down
Dead end job no way to move up
    No raises in 4 years
If managers don't like you, even if you do a good job, they will lower your bonus at the end of the year.
very political. some people got promotions playing to manager's egos while undermining their coworkers performance.
When things got tough, managers would only look out for themselves and threw the people on their team under the bus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Attachmate should get rid the rest of the managers and then sell off the rest of Novell. The company isn't worth keeping around since Novell can't compete.

    Pros

surrounded by great people with great talents

    Cons

How is it possible for a CEO to have spent over $5 billion dollars on MA - and have achieved no gain? How is it that a CEO has, quarter over quarter, yr over yr, lost margin and revenue and NOT been replaced - Fired?

I worked at Novell full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Once upon a time it was a good company to work for.

Decent technology exposure for new comers.

Work life balance was there once upon a time and now limited to few legacy products.

    Cons

Revenue decline across all BU's for last so many years

With new Microfocus acquisition , some more layoffs seems to be on horizon. Although recruitment is in progress for filling recent attrition, it is mostly due to foresighted cuts expected. Might be scary for new joiners.

Salary is not competitive and no stock options.
