Good people, Plan is to Get Return on Private Investment, NOT Growth

I worked at Novell full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I loved the people in Provo and Seattle, they were great to work with. Benefits are great including the gym, cafeteria, outdoor facilities like basketball court and volleyball court. Great vacation benefits, decent healthcare, ok 401k

    Cons

Only a few people know how to make a difference and they're held back by a financial model that worked at Attachmate to get return on investor purchase. If the company doesn't grow and they milk the investment, they get what they want. When that dries up, they'll buy another company. SUSE and NetIQ may be an exception but they are constrained by the same financial structure: strict hiring processes, very little R&D, and little focus on the future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the GMs make decisions about hiring and firing. Consider investing more in existing products and businesses to try to turn things around rather than just milking the cow. A death spiral is no fun to be a part of.

I have been working at Novell full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great peers and lower management, very flexible workplace.

    Cons

Mediocre middle management. Horrible upper management. Current C-levels are just ordinary C-levels with no passion for the business or the brands. Yet another round of deep cuts. Benefits get worse and worse every year. Not enough resources (people) to cover the business so the few remaining people are more and more overworked.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Quit.

    I worked at Novell

    Pros

    Good work/life balance
    Many talented and passionate people
Provo campus is nice with onsite gym and cafe

    Cons

Salary is not up to par with other software companies.
Medical Benefits were moved over to Attachmate's plan which aren't as good
Post takeover by Attachmate Group, things change as they always do. Some good while others bad. Some of the managers new to the company aren't up to the task.
The company had it's hay day and is desperately trying to reinvent itself. They cut back in so many areas that they are not putting the right level of resources into launching new competitive products.
Generally speaking businesses look at the company as a dinosaur with outdated technology. While this isn't true, that's the perception. They may have good ideas, but fail to execute.
I don't know what the existing customer defection rate is; whatever the number it is not good.
It's risky to join the company at this point as the long term future is in question.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Best of luck.

I have been working at Novell full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Great work-life balance.
Beautiful campus, onsite gym, cafeteria, chiropractor, bank.
Decent benefits, though steadily going downhill

    Cons

Much of compensation plan is in the bonus structure, so if company doesn't qualify for bonus, then compensation is significantly lower.
New management (Attachmate) is more concerned about cutting costs than having a good team and building good software.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back in touch with your employees. Find ways to express genuine appreciation. Allocate funds for merit bonuses and pay raises.

I have been working at Novell full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The people (employees) here have always been great to work with. Balance between work life and personal life are also great.

    Cons

Upper management in over their heads. When the attachmate group acquired Novell, we had a lot of hope that they would finally fix this company. Nearly two years and many empty promises, and obvious lack of knowledge of how to run a large company, most employees that I know are looking for a place to go. I have yet to see this company end of life a product, and as a result, they have more and more products, and less people to work on them. Employees are burned out for the workload they have, with no hope of a sensible product portfolio. Marketing has always been abysmal, with no signs of change in the future. :(

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep your commitments. Make the profit sharing plan you touted so much upon acquiring Novell a reality. This company is still very profitable though in decline, yet you mistakenly hold groups accountable for what they have no control over, and reward the people who *should* be accountable. As long as Bob gets his trip to "club" I guess it'll never change.

Once budgets are approved. please honor them. It is ridiculous to have a budget approved for hiring or hardware etc. to have to get approval from Jeff Hawn to start going down the path of acquiring the already approved budget item. Once the person or hardware is selected, we then have to have to have Jeff yet again approve it a 3rd time! It seems most often lately that on the third approval of the already twice approved asset, the request is finally denied. I could go on. But I think I'll just, go.

    Pros

    - Great colleagues to work with
    - Nice on-site cafeteria
    - Great work-out facility
    - Excellent vacation / sick policy
    - Flexible - family oriented environment

    Cons

    - Lack of raises
    - Little to no opportunity for advancement
    - New management team struggling after acquisition
    - Benefits getting worse (401k match, health insurance options)
    - Aging workforce, lack of innovation - new blood needed
    - Competitive environment and declining sales for legacy products
    - Bonus system that rewards everyone equally regardless of contributions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow for some differentiation / salary bumps to retain key people. Work on hiring younger engineers to bring in new ideas.
