I worked at NuVasive full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The veteran employees are what made coming to work each day worth it. They lived the culture that made NuVasive great. The mission of the company is meaningful and Nuvasive has definitely changed spine surgery.

    Cons

There is absolutely no work/life balance at this company. You are expected to be available at a moments notice 24/7. There are too many passing themes that no one follows and it is just lip service. The focus is definitely on the bottom line now at the expense of the employees, although the management team will spin it to their favor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember what made NuVasive great and the rest will follow.

I worked at NuVasive full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

They hire very smart people most with Masters degree but limited experience. Gym, free healthy snacks, great pricey food in the cafeteria. People are great but distracted by pressure of always trying to be responsive.

    Cons

Overall the culture and the people define what the work environment will be. You must be dedicated to this company to maintain employment, everyday there are problems that require attention. it is one firefight after another, no time to define root cause and develop procedures for long term solutions. thus leaving you with long hours at the office with no time for personal life. Its no coincidence that 90%(approx.) are single and have the time to dedicate, due to not having a life. Just imagine being on a business trip with the long hours, this is what if felt like for the years I worked there. They tend to hire very smart people, most of which have just gotten their Masters which is a great opportunity for them. Unfortunately, they lack experience to improve current processes and creates more fires that need to be put out!. Some Managers are moved up in the ranks mainly because they are sons/daughters of surgeons that use their products. Others are moved up for their dedication (working long hours) and sometimes by playing the political game and therefore do not have the experience to manage people. Turnover was high in the supply chain department mainly due to people getting burned out and management mistakes causing extra work to correct issues. best part of working there was working with your co-workers day to day and laughing together on the mistakes made by management. the bad - no processes, no trust(you need to save all your e-mails), long hours, and no end to slowing down the freight train of day to day problems

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Help People become a success. please train them so they will be successful on the job rather than having them learn learn the hard-painful way.

    Pros

Well paid. There are some very good people there though they will not say anything. The campus is a once campus and well maintained.

    Cons

They own you 24x7x365 a year. Bad culture and no work life balance. Very politic executive team that does not walk the walk that they claim.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being so political and care about your employees.

I worked at NuVasive full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Fun corporate events (but they are mandatory which takes the fun out of them)
    Decent Benefits
Exciting work that really benefits people

    Cons

The Culture is a CULT. After I left this company I felt like I had to detox. Your best work is considered average and is usually overlooked. Promotions are very hard to come by. When you finally get promoted it is for very little money. No opportunity or career path.

I have been working at NuVasive full-time

    Pros

Remote in to work from home, this can be good and bad because you are required to work at home after regular work hours, some free snacks, gym, cafeteria (very expensive by the way!)

    Cons

Brown nosing is the norm, you will not get anywhere in this company if you do not join in this practice. Management will blame you for their faults in your mid-year reviews in order to prevent you from a promotion/raise or to mask to upper execs that their management skills just sucks! If you don't kiss butt you are doomed, don't even apply, PERIOD! management will remind you that you need to brown nose in order to make your job easier, very disturbing! Join management for drinks or after work events or else they will not like you, hence, you will never get important projects or promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lots of talented, smart and skilled individuals have left or in process of leaving the company because lots of mediocre, egocentric, drunk, party-animal management have joined the company. Stop forcing people into mandatory company events, we all want to have a life outside of work, we all want to have some time with our families. Lots of people with a charming mouths, but very low or null results. Get more Senior leaders in order to train the young and fresh, some engineers don't even know what they are doing because management don't train them properly.

I worked at NuVasive as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

There are many company team building events, lots of beer drinking.

    Cons

    Management has no vision.
Sales go down so environment can be very hostile.
You will have to take a spinal exam - something that you might never need in your whole life.
If you work in software development this is not a good place to develop your skills.

I worked at NuVasive full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There are decent benefits (Medical, Dental, etc), on-site gym, Blackberry (also a con), catered lunches, free snacks, and soda. Good place to learn about the medical industry specifically the spine market. Good place to use a stepping stone to something better. There are SOME good people that work here that you can make real connection with.

    Cons

The environment is a similar to that of cult. Lots of emphasis placed on the corporate CULTure and memorization of company gibberish. The culture is used as a weapon against you in an attempt to conform/control you (being an “A” player). There is no clear career path here. This is a great place to be for contractor/consulting firm and not a regular FTE. Promotions based on how much you kiss up and not actual skills / work accomplished.

-Blackberry given (you must respond with “absolute responsiveness” <15 mins)
    -No Matching 401k
-No Regular Casual Dress (not even casual Friday)
    -No Tuition Reimbursement
    -Political environment
-Long hours (>50 hours) is considered the norm

    I worked at NuVasive

    Pros

Better than average salary (but severely negated by hours of expected work)
    Nice Facilities and benefits

    Cons

At first blush this is an excellent place to work. Great salary and benefits and some nice co-workers . After your first day this facade starts to fall away. First, there is a statue of a Cheetah in the lobby and many flat screen televisions showing the same thing: A Cheetah running at full speed with flames morphing out of its backside. The company creed is "Absolute Responsiveness" and you quickly come to understand that this means ZERO personal life for you. You will be given a blackberry and told you must be "Easy to do biz with." Essentially translating: sleep with your blackberry and answer *any* request/email within 15 minutes..and they *will* come in 24/7. People don't chat in the break rooms, they grab their coffee, mutter a pleasantry and literally speedwalk back to their desks. There is a disturbing current of unmistakable churce silence mixed with a little anxiety in the air. After all, perhaps you aren't working fast enough or hard enough? (---even though you know you are).

Most people work 10-11 hour days at the office and then keep on going when they get home. This isn't because they necessarily want to, the fear of not being part of the corporate group-think culture demands it. One person told me that "if you aren't drinking and on anti-depressants, you soon will be.." and I must agree with the assessment. When you interview, you will see many people with dark circles and bags under their eyes. Take note, this means something. Bottom line: If you thrive in a culture-heavy "Orwellian 1984 group -think" environment, this is the place for you! Free thinkers and those who desire a healthy work/life balance - *Should not apply. Period*

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be exceptionally clear to potential employees what your weekly work time expectations are. Do not expect employees to complete all of your training modules and mandatory training exercises on their own time when they are first and foremost trying to learn their job. Offering a gym on-site is nice, but what is the point if you feel compelled to work through every lunch at your desk and well into the evening?
