    Pros

    - strong, knowledgeable executive team
    - 401K match
    - relaxed dress code
    - free snacks and coffee

    Cons

    - relatively low compensation compared to the work load
    - depending on your team, culture and management style varies
    - quick to judge, you will soon know if you fit in the team or not. and in the case you don't, you will find that exit door faster than you expect
    - turnover rate is high.

All in all, your experience at Nuvasive will depend a lot on the team you are hired into, In my case, all team members worked independently and in the beginning, you'll spend a lot of time figuring things out yourself.

Management is usually clueless on what exactly they are looking for, which translates to frequent revisions or in some cases, entire overhaul of the project. A lot of time is wasted on explaining methods and convincing managers, who are in their position solely based on the years they've worked there, and have no technical abilities and lack direction (13 years with the company, does not know how to zoom in on Excel spreadsheets).

This is the observation I made based on my two years employment at the company. Be advised, unless miracles happen, you will be in your initial role for a very long time, upwards movement is scarce and you'll find yourself doing the same thing for years. At the end I found a much larger company and am now able to make clear distinctions.

    Advice to Management

Hire competent team leaders who are experienced in their team's function. Duration at the company should not be the basis of seniority.

    Pros

The team you directly work with keep the mission in mind. Also over time they become a bit of a second family.

    Cons

Pay scale seems to be a bit off. This needs to be revisited, someone who works full time should never have to struggle paycheck to paycheck. Managers don't seem to communicate with their team leads that often lead to confusion among employee's.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employee's what they are worth.

    Pros

Cool spinal technology. It feels good when you support their philanthropic efforts. Pretty good pay and for the most part good benefits. Events are usually fun. If you're willing to drink the corporate kool-aid then you can go far. Pretty good gym/exercise facilities and workout options. There are a lot of really good people here who are trying their best to make it great despite some of the obstacles.

    Cons

Corporate cult-like mentality. You can either advance in this company or have a good work-life balance, you can't do both. Every department runs so lean in staffing that there's no chance to catch your breath. It's more about doing things quickly than doing them intelligently. Budgets get slashed and you're still expected to just "do more with less". The executive level is way out of touch with the average employee and it's becoming disillusioning. There's definitely a good old boy's club and most of us aren't in it. They finally are implementing a 401k match but it's tiny and pretty obviously a distraction from the other areas of benefits that they're cutting. Lots of the old-timers with a lot of experience in this company are getting burnt out and leaving for greener pastures.

    Advice to Management

There's a lot of distrust in how you present new company-wide initiatives. If it's designed to save the company money, just say so. We know it is. It's obvious we're all about catering to wall street these days.

    Pros

Managment is always open to new ideas and implements them if it saves the company money and makes our job easier.Very good time off policies.

    Cons

Things i see that need improvement are, no 401K match, no pension plan, the pay is laughable compared to other medical companies in the memphis area.Great place to work if thats all you all looking for in a job.

    Advice to Management

If you are going play with the Big Gorrilla, then you need to pay like the Big Gorrilla .There is way to much employee turnover and pay is the reason I hear the most for people leaving the company.

    Pros

Very innovative product driven company that believes in improving patient outcomes. Smart hard working people who put forth great effort. Compensation is good and San Diego is a nice place to live and work. Great potential in beating competition. Fun events on a quarterly basis.

    Cons

Unrealistic expectations of employees and they are overworked and under appreciated (poor work/life balance). Leadership is inexperienced in developing standards and they don't seem to practice what they preach. Quite often use the culture of 'absolute responsiveness' as a weapon and senior management is very close minded to listen to improvement ideas. They seem to value high effort and frenetic activity to just 'get things done' over actual quality and results outside of the products. Highly scattered energy where leaders try to take on way more than they can handle and work standards are compromised. Teams end up suffering as senior leadership also tends to over delegate.

    Advice to Management

Prioritize better and don't try and to take on so many initiatives. Develop personal relationships with your teams and appreciate them more. Be open minded to improvement ideas. Spend more time doing root cause analysis and invest time into planning before jumping into action so quickly. Develop more awareness of leadership styles/approaches and realize the impact that you have on employees. Motivate and inspire instead of being overly critical and looking at what is wrong first.

    Pros

Fun activities (team events, Cheetah Ball, fundraising, etc.) and good fitness programs (onsite classes, running club, softball). Also a young and innovative team with a lot of generation X and Y'ers.

    Cons

Management is top heavy. A lot of employees have a manager title even if they aren't managing anyone or anything. And the managers that do have direct reports have not been trained well, so they end up making the problem worse.

There is room for growth and learning, only so far as taking on more work, having longer hours, and not necessarily getting fairly compensated for the extra workload. The culture breeds contempt and a feeling of mass superiority over other organizations (no matter who they are). More emphasis seems to be put on "hating" on competitors (even the CEO does this quite often) than focusing on the task at hand and growing camaraderie within the organization. The result is childish banter that often leads to frenetic activity instead of productivity.

    Advice to Management

Focus less on "them" and more on "us". Level out the organization so you have enough individual contributors to do the work, versus only managers who want to be high level and not in the details.

    Pros

Great ideas around culture. Some really invested employees. Great health benefits and pay for performance culture. Nice facilities including gym and cafe.

    Cons

Seemingly annual promotions for upper management while the rest wait promotion cycles. Inconsistent treatment across teams in similar functions. If you're not in the inner circle your opportunities will be limited.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the hard work of those at the lower levels.

Strict work schedule (e.g. You will be required to work even during harsh weather conditions)
Strict competition from already well established spine companies and new companies
Poor Management at Memphis location. New leadership, don't know what they are doing

    Pros

Technology is great. If you like medical device development, you'll have lots of interesting and challenging problems to solve.

    Cons

Overworked, underpaid. Way too many hours. Lots of wasted effort.

    Advice to Management

Don't try to make a team of stars. Rather create a solid team where everybody has a specific job, not do-it-all people.
