Good learning opportunities, but corporate culture makes it difficult to stay above water or get ahead.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
San Diego, CA

I have been working at NuVasive full-time

ProsFun activities (team events, Cheetah Ball, fundraising, etc.) and good fitness programs (onsite classes, running club, softball). Also a young and innovative team with a lot of generation X and Y'ers.

ConsManagement is top heavy. A lot of employees have a manager title even if they aren't managing anyone or anything. And the managers that do have direct reports have not been trained well, so they end up making the problem worse.

There is room for growth and learning, only so far as taking on more work, having longer hours, and not necessarily getting fairly compensated for the extra workload. The culture breeds contempt and a feeling of mass superiority over other organizations (no matter who they are). More emphasis seems to be put on "hating" on competitors (even the CEO does this quite often) than focusing on the task at hand and growing camaraderie within the organization. The result is childish banter that often leads to frenetic activity instead of productivity.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus less on "them" and more on "us". Level out the organization so you have enough individual contributors to do the work, versus only managers who want to be high level and not in the details.

The rich get richer...

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at NuVasive full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat ideas around culture. Some really invested employees. Great health benefits and pay for performance culture. Nice facilities including gym and cafe.

ConsSeemingly annual promotions for upper management while the rest wait promotion cycles. Inconsistent treatment across teams in similar functions. If you're not in the inner circle your opportunities will be limited.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize the hard work of those at the lower levels.

NuVasive - Great Company with mediocre Management

Manager (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at NuVasive full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat Culture, focus on fitness and health
Comparatively better salaries
Learn about Spine Surgery and Products irrespective of Department you work in.

ConsStrict work schedule (e.g. You will be required to work even during harsh weather conditions)
Strict competition from already well established spine companies and new companies
Poor Management at Memphis location. New leadership, don't know what they are doing

Advice to Senior Management1. Improve the key leadership skills in Memphis
2.Introdce 401K in addition to Stock options

The job is interesting, but too much of the corporate crap. Too much of individual effort, no team work.

Engineer (Current Employee)
San Diego, CA

I have been working at NuVasive full-time for more than 3 years

ProsTechnology is great. If you like medical device development, you'll have lots of interesting and challenging problems to solve.

ConsOverworked, underpaid. Way too many hours. Lots of wasted effort.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't try to make a team of stars. Rather create a solid team where everybody has a specific job, not do-it-all people.

Like going to a second college

Sales Coordinator (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at NuVasive

ProsI made some really close friends while working at NuVasive. The company had an ample amount of 20-30 year old's who were very smart and willing to work long hours for little reward which brought us all closer. I also learned more about the industry than I would have working anywhere else. They do an excellent job of making sure everyone in the company knows what they're selling. I would describe it as college for the Spine industry. Long hours, great learning experience, fraternity feel, but after 3 years you just want out.

ConsMy biggest complaint is the management. Everyone seemed to be promoted based on their friendships with other managers versus their ability or competencies. Or they threatened to quit and were promoted instead. NuVasive tends to wait until the last possible minute to make sure you stick around, but a lot of times it's too late. The management in my case did not show appreciation for their employees unless they were in front of others and expected to do so. They also never gave credit where it was due and instead took the credit for all accomplishments for themselves.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop trying to make yourself look good and focus on your team, that will pay off sooner than stabbing your employees in the back.

Also - Alex, you really need to take a look in the mirror and stop being so arro

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at NuVasive

ProsIf you sound intelligent to the right people, you will be fine
lots of swag
50% of engineer are definitely overpaid for what they do/deliver

Consgrowing pains and recent legal setbacks

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to be closer to each department to understand what they are going though, monitor employee performance, involve shareowners in more management decisions. Promote based on experience and value added skill set NOT how close and friendly one is to senior executives

Cultish

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at NuVasive

ProsIf you're a young person trying to get a start in medtech, it's a good spot. The lower and middle management ranks are reasonably competent and care about the well-being of their reports.

ConsThe place is a cult. Way too much time is spent worrying about "the culture", while not nearly enough is spent actually managing the business. Upper management is strong at brand marketing and raising capital. At building and maintaining a corporate infrastructure, hiring practices, IT systems, and the other nuts-and-bolts aspects of running a medtech business, they are the least competent group I have encountered in my career.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company has grown stale, and it shows in the quarterly results. It's time to reinvent yourselves. Probably doesn't hurt to encourage some upper execs to retire to board seats and bring in some fresh blood to reinvigorate the company.
