I like the people I work with at NuVasive - they are why I keep coming to work each day.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe best part about working here is the people that I work with. I really appreciate my bosses and how supportive they are of me. I like being part of a healthcare company and all that we do to make people's lives better. I think having a Spine Foundation that helps others globally, is a highlight here.

ConsLong drive (in traffic). I sometimes feel the "Absolute Responsiveness" is used against us. It doesn't allow for making sure that the work is done "right the first time". I think we sometimes just do things to get them done instead of taking our time, so we don't have to redo things. Lack of 401k match. I see a lot of imbalance with work and family life. Over spending by upper management.

Advice to Senior ManagementI feel upper management should curtail some of the spending they do - first class airline seats, waiting until the last minute to decide on flights that result in higher costs, spending a lot of money on alcohol. Off site meetings in expensive hotels should be curtailed. Use the money you would save to increase people's salaries or bonuses. Look at the amount of hours people are spending working, on emails from home, etc. and if they need help, consider hiring temps/interns to help out. People need a life outside of work.

Great company ... with even greater potential

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsSmall company feel -- actively engaged people with lots of great ideas and passion. I feel loved and supported. Great benefits package.

ConsStrict dress code (not even casual Fridays). There are some blockers on the management team resistant to change.

Advice to Senior ManagementRelax the dress code and make sure you "walk the talk" when focusing on profitable growth. Meaning, don't cut programs but still fund extravagant events.

Exciting company that is changing the spine market

    Systems Administrator (Current Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsNew IT leadership is rapidly improving the IT organization. They truly care about the employees, and have made work-life balance a priority. In general, NuVasive makes a huge investment in their employees to ensure they know what the company does, and helps to drive culture in all aspects of the business.

ConsBenefits are little behind other great San Diego companies. There is a huge amount of work to do, so its easy to have competing priorities.

Advice to Senior ManagementRethink the benefits programs. Continue to support the IT organization!

ProsGreat benefits, nice enviroment and you are making a difference in the world!

ConsThe traffic in and out of Sorrento Valley. Pay could be better.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to look at pay, too many employees have left for better paying jobs. More training for managers and some VP's. Younger group needs more experience on how to manger people- they lack people experience.

    Experience at NuVasive

    Senior Administrative Assistant (Current Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsGreat corporate culture and team atmosphere. Good compensation and benefits.

ConsAn over-emphasis on vetting out some positions through the temp process, while making hasty hiring decisions in other areas. I do not believe the emphasis on the vetting process does enough to curb turnover in itself- rather, a fairer and more discriminating hiring process for all would be more beneficial to all.

Advice to Senior ManagementI do not believe the emphasis on the employee vetting-process does enough to curb turnover in itself - rather, a fairer and more discriminating hiring process for all might be more beneficial.

Sky is the limit, if you have the time and dedication to get there.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsI've never worked around a group of higher achieving individuals. The majority of the people here, are incredibly smart, driven, and energetic. The environment pushes one to always seek to improve. Good health coverage, onsite gym, and free healthy snacks, are some of the perks. Rapidly growing, successful company, that pushes you to be creative, and raise the bar everyday. Opportunity for career growth is good, if you're willing to put in the effort. Ability to make a true impact to the company is high, because it is small, and growing rapidly.

ConsIT infrastructure, and automated tools do not keep up with the rapid growth of the business. It is a constant challenge to have to create the tools to do your work. You must be willing to work long hours, and be highly responsive, even when not in the office, if you plan to be successful (much like if you had your own business). Process, and procedures are being created/improved daily, as they too lag behind the growth of the company. Fighting fires, can detract from one's ability to complete truly value-add work. Headcount is lean, for the amount of work.

Advice to Senior ManagementHeadcount is too lean to support our growth. Employee burnout should be a major concern. Compensation ranges need to be improved.

    Marketing (Current Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsTremendous growth opportunities; hard work and high performance are rewarded; awesome employee-driven culture; innovative product portfolio

ConsDepends on your perspective...if you are just looking for a "job," and are not passionate about culture, performance and innovation, this likely is not the place for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep making the patients we serve and our culture the priority as we continue to grow globally and expand our market share.

Fast Paced & Demanding but Great Experience

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsThe Company Culture rings true in each shareowner, and the bottom line is to change spine surgery to create great patient outcomes. The employees are smart, innovative and very driven to be at their best at all times. One element of the Culture is a required spine exam which, while challenging, game me the opportunity to learn about all NuVasive products and surgical procedures- no other employer felt it important for every employee to become that knowledgeable of the products and services.

There are quarterly, internal events that help create a sense of community in the organization as well as provide everyone a consistent recap of the quarter's outcome. The company also offers good bonus packages, 401k and discounted stock purchasing. Their Wellness program and in-house gym is also an added perk that many companies don't offer.

ConsAlong with the Culture comes a sense of responsiveness which in some individuals and cases represents frenetic activity. This has led to some burnout but Leadership is working to manage this. The Company is also still looking for an effective mix to keep employees engaged and motivated (training, promotion, compensations, etc.)

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in improving internal systems and software so employees (current and new) can work more efficiently- some current systems are extremely outdated for this size of a company. Also highly consider offering a 401k match to stay competitive with other employers.
