Standard fair for a Retail Company

    Delivery Specialist (Current Employee)
    Madison Heights, MI

ProsNice co-workers/team members, no age, race, gender discrimination etc. Driving is fairly easy to learn and it helps to know the area you are hired in even though they are happy to help you with directions. No GPS, cell phone, or any other kind of electronic device distraction allowed. This includes food, beverages, and, thankfully, smoking.

ConsCompletely a Southern kind of company when it comes to unions and the Affordable Care Act. Dropped all benefits for part time employees like holiday pay and getting company Health Care. They either can't afford it, they are opposed to it or both. They are just above minimum wage for Driver hourly. Where I live the minimum wage is $X.XX/hr so O'Reilly's pay to me is $(X+1).00.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet's get the two-way radios into all the delivery vehicles.

    A good entry level job.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThis is a good company to work for if you want to supplement your income with a part time job. If you're a do-it-yourself mechanic that wrenches on your own vehicles you'll find the discount on parts to be especially attractive. This is an easy career path for a young person with a high school diploma or even an associates degree and an outgoing personality.

ConsOut of date technology, methods and practices creates too many opportunities for errors on the part of employees. Teamwork and culture must be cultivated rather than forced by policy.

Advice to Senior ManagementGood salesmen don't always make good store, district or regional managers. The company's focus on sales should be balanced with excellent management training to improve the company's middle management team.

It's all about high numbers/sales with this company, or you'll get promoted to a customer!

    Assistant Manager (Current Employee)

ProsGood health benefits, stock option plan is fair, 401k is fair if you max out your contribution to it and employee part's discount is better than most. Training is great, but you soon find out that you're probably going to use that training and knowledge somewhere else, for a different part's company when your eyes are open to how depressing this company can be to work for.

ConsHard work, long hours, split shifts, breaks are basically non-existent, constant pressure to keep your related sales up (Sales of items such as antifreeze sold with a water pump or radiator) sales goal is constantly rammed down your throat no matter how bad the economy is, as the company doesn't want to hear any excuses as to why sales are down, out of date equipment such as the 80's type Oki Data printers that use the old greenbar paper and ribbon ink, invoices still do not use the bar code system, so all customer returns have to be searched manually, pay is low and not consistent with other parts companies. They praise you on being a team member, family and tell you that commission will help your pay, when in reality it's pennies on the dollar and you can seriously make more by saving the change you find in the store or make from customers giving you a tip. You are on your feel ALL DAY and forget about taking sick leave or vacation, because it is so short staffed, that no one is there to work for you if you need to take a sick day off and the threat of letting you go will be brought to your attention if you need time like that off. You are replaceable, and they have a company wide saying of telling you that if you don't follow their rules and policies, you will be promoted to a customer!

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter pay, more flexible hours, updated systems, updated hardware, higher commission sharing, more store staffing, better vacation/sick hours, comps/pay that are attractive to management positions so people will want to take promotions, less work loads on management/team members and tone down the constant pressure and complaining from corporate, that all runs downhill to everybody else as threats, only to scare team members and have them leave the company to other part stores! Get rid of the "Talent Farm" mentality that O'Reilly Auto Parts is famous for, as all of the other part's companies constantly take our employees because of things like low pay and sales pressure, which could be fixed so easily but for some unknown reason, corporate will not open their eyes to any of these problems!
