A great place to work as long as you don't think about it too much.

Computer User Support Analyst III (Current Employee)
Portland, OR

I have been working at OHSU

Prosgreat benefits, although the union is currently bargaining, so who knows what will happen. My department offers very flexible hours and I work in a more isolated environment where I am able to hide from the daily bull crap that goes on in the rest of the university.
Oh yeah, and they have a super expensive tram with no climate control.

ConsPoor executive leadership.
Hypocritical upper level managers/division directors
People making decisions for others without considering the needs of people doing the work.
Joe Robertson's stupid emails talking about budget crisis when he owns three homes and got a $1million + bonus last year.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a freaking paycut and show some humanity. Oh, and learn how to run a business where everyone benefits, not just the people who are already high on the hog.

Decent lower tier research institute

Research Assistant II (Former Employee)
Portland, OR

I worked at OHSU

ProsResearchers labs seem to have a very laid back attitude which makes for a very comfortable work environment but does not produce optimal productivity. Communication within departments is good but institution level interactions are rare. Commuting options are excellent, even providing monetary incentives ride your bike to work (how Portland!). Nice view.

ConsCumbersome institutional administration, little social interaction within my department. Good research fills a niche but is not cutting edge or exciting as that going on elsewhere. Focus is definitely more on the hospital side of the operation (ie the moneymaker) rather than research side. Came to feel more like a 9 to 5 commitment than an engaging pursuit.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep the tram free

OHSU-Good, overall, to postdocs

Postdoctoral Fellow (Current Employee)
Portland, OR

I have been working at OHSU

ProsThe university is doing cutting edge research in the field of neuroscience, molecular biology, and cancer therapies.

ConsDepending on advisor, postdocs may not receive adequate "mentoring" and may be treated as workers, not trainees.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot sure how one can change the current "postdoc" culture.

Great place for slackers to work.

Senior Research Associate (Former Employee)
Portland, OR

I worked at OHSU

ProsOHSU contributes 12% of your salary to a retirement plan for you. I have not come across any other research university that offers that kind of retirement compensation. Also, you can earn up to 5 weeks vacation.

ConsThere are a lot of dead weight employees working there. These are people that most likely couldn't make it anywhere else. The university hires them because their cheap. OHSU needs to develop a better career path for junior researchers. If you are a senior research associate working in a lab you will be doing the same job for the rest of your career. The university should recruit some of these people into other positions.

Advice to Senior ManagementLobby for some kind of management training program. Learn how to deal with bad employees. Learn how to recognize the good employees. Ask for their feedback. Creat a better plan for promotions.

The good ole boys are still in charge.

Assistant Professor of Nursing (Current Employee)
Portland, OR

I have been working at OHSU

Prosreputation, proximity of educational and clinical buildings (hospital), research activity, variety of educational programs

Consrigidly hierarchical, physician-dominated, with an anachronistic emphasis on empire-building versus caring for people. We do not need more towering glass buildings! Monuments to the money-makers are not progress.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember who really does the work of hospitals: NURSES! Education is crucial to the advancement of health care at all levels. Take a look at what really happens in your classrooms and hospital rooms; talk to the people really doing the work. MDs and MBAs sitting around a board room table are not going to solve the problems.

Good mission and great people thwarted by unnecessary politics

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at OHSU full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe people you work with everyday are fabulous. They make this place work.

ConsThe upper level management has a bizarre obsession with politics that unfortunately trickles down heavily and the executive level leadership is completely out of touch. All of this makes honest communication very difficult.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen more. Really listen. You have some of the most highly educated staff anywhere. You can learn a lot from them. And stop hiring consultants.
