I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They pay well. ON has grown through acquisition of stand alone technology companies and has a broad product portfolio, older technology, but broad.

    Cons

Training regarding ON semi's systems is virtually non existent. The organizational structure is the same as the CEO's alma mater, National Semiconductor. BU's compete for factory capacity. National Semiconductor was bought by Texas Instruments.

Only consider wokring for ON if you have no other options.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire managers who have good people skills. Promoting engineers via the 'good 'ol by' system leads to tyrannical, dictatorial managers who only care about their P&L and view subordinates as an impact to it.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The company has excellent code of conduct. Being a technology company, the processes and way of work is fast and efficient. There is so much learning in this company.

    Cons

Important aspect of the code of conduct is not lived up with as how it was being professed. "Old boys club" ruled the senior management circle. Retaliation is prevalent especially if you did not sing in chorus with favored supplier of the senior manager. Very few or no internal opportunities. Your position today will be yours until maybe next 10 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retire your senior managers and infuse fresh blood until its not too late.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

working hours are flexibel, we get a company car without fuel car which is good for the envirenement, etc.

    Cons

Internal spec are very hard to understand, huge paper work needed for any simple action, priority is given to quarterly revenue rather than to quality, etc... A bit demotivationg sometimes..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please give us the room to make a qualitative work...

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people there really are great to work with. Compensation is decent, benefits are good. IT systems are marginal - designed for minimizing IT cost, not user productity/satisfaction

    Cons

Used to have Great people, but whittled down to just good people. Never ending move of jobs offshore, and appearantly no interest in being part of a US jobs program. Work 10-12 hr days, forget a night life with calls to asia.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider a profit sharing program, or a much broader stock participation program instead of keeping 90% at the top levels. Stop treating employees like the don't have other options just because there is no work in Phoenix.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

They looked good at the "Hiring Our Veterans", Job Fair. My friend qualified for the open maintenance technician position. HR saw His resume at the job fair and said to him, "We would like to have you". Thou, HR did not reply to his application and resume.

    Cons

Politics, Politics, Politics!!! What a slap in the face to every veteran that applied to ON at the "Hiring Our Veterans", Job Fair. He was told to go online and apply. While all this time they got publicity from the news Paper and TV. They did not want to hire a qualified veteran. If it were not for veterans, there would be no ON. Mad, you bet I am Mad. They used military veterans just for advertizing their company ON name. I plan on quiting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire the very ones whom are willing to die for your freedom. What is wrong with your HR Department? I bet that you could not count the veterans you have hired at ON on one hand. Shame on you!!!

Supply Chain in PHX will chew you up and spit you out!

Current Employee - Strategic Sourcing Manager

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Not a lot of actual supply chain experience in the management team of Global Supply Chain Operations. They are all transplants from other organizations within ON Semi, basically just completing a "tour of duty" as a favor to executive management. Great opportunity to bring actual supply chain experience to the team, just not in an overly offensive way.

    Cons

There is NO chance of lower level sourcing managers to be promoted into senior positions within On semi GSCO. They will burn you out and kick you to the curb, without hesitation. And if they have the opportunity, management will outsource your position to Asia, while you are still in it!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize that your sourcing managers and buyers are your strategic assets in accomplishing the corporate initiatives and protect them in their daily struggles to accomplish their goals! Common sense at other companies, but not at ON Semi.

Current Employee - Engineer in Gresham, OR

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people to work with in engineering
    No dress-code
    Generally casual atmosphere in engineering
They appear to be growing strong and have not had a layoff or furlough in a couple of years

    Cons

Poor labor practices in manufacturing operations (long temp-to-hire process)
Poor review, promotion, and raise structure
~50 hours per week mandatory (poor work-life balance)
    Overly compartmentalized
Slightly below industry average for wages and benefits (and getting worse: health insurance gets worse every year, raises are very small)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a reason all the other companies in the area are picking off your experienced engineers: you can get paid better, and get better benefits anywhere else.
The 10 month delay between review and raise/promotion is a mockery of the review process.
Try respecting your employees a little more. You make them work hard enough, why not reward them when the company is doing record business? If this is how good it gets when the company is doing great, I would hate to see it when the company is taking a downturn.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The people on my team are great. Among team members there is no back-stabbing or ladder climbing. These people are thinning due to attrition and multiple years of the effects of the "Cons" section, but there are still good groups of people in isolated places.

    Cons

From the corporate level down they have a strategy of "just under industry average". That extends to rate of hiring, amount of people staffed on projects, quality of projects, compensation, benefits, technology, IP, etc. This theory was actually stated in those words at an HR meet-and-greet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is a global market. If you want to be a winner, you have to lead. You don't lead by following. Get a vision and back it. Hire good people and believe them when they tell you something.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Some good people
    Good operations/supply chain
Some new executive appointments seem to be a move in the right direction
Depending on role work/life balance is pretty good (few people put in more work than they have to)

    Cons

Very slow and conservative. Always behind competition in product development
Short term planning. Only thing that matters is this quarter's numbers
Lack of overall strategy. Company is run as a loosely aligned set of individual business units.
CEO is a poor leader who does not 'do' strategy
    Lack of career opportunities
    Very political
Cost cutting and job cuts have damaged morale

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start thinking more long term. Time to refresh more of the top exec team. New leadership is required.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Opportunity for movement and growth around the company (ie will allow to transfer easily between departments). Will look good on a resume as it is a large international company. Lets you work from home as often as you want, flex schedule

    Cons

Forced time off, negative vacation! Hire horrible, inexperienced managers. Very political environment with lots of office drama.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do better research on your new hires. Get rid of the old workers who are eating up the payroll and maybe we wouldn't have to take so much forced time off. And do something nice for your employees!
