I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The people in the trenches are great. The Design teams have been able to design some very difficult chips.

    Cons

The pay is nothing to write home about. The benefits used to be great and they are slowly whittling those down to where I could get better benefits working at Costco.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating your engineers like they are disposable assets. It is difficult to get people to want to move to Idaho, where there are no other options for employment if things don't go well. You should be working harder to maintain the good engineers you already have here.

I worked at ON Semiconductor full-time

    Pros

The company was a great one to work for, the managers and employees within the various groups were pleasant to work with. There was open communication when issues would arise. There were many events created to show employee appreciation, which sometimes lacks at other companies - they did it very well. Cafeteria food was accessible and edible and saved time and money instead of going out to eat every day.

    Cons

Group collaboration outside of the engineering roles needed a little work, it was very hierarchical and had limited creative resources. Decision making was slow, on several fronts.

I worked at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Provides a great jumpstart for new college graduates for any discipline.
Above average pay for the geographical area.
Generally flexible with work schedule and personal life.
410k plan is good. Matches dollar for dollar up to 4%.
    Plenty of free covered parking!
Coworkers are great depending on the group.

    Cons

Health care options have been reduced over the years. The "options" are you elect coverage or no coverage. Only an 80/20 high-deductible plan is offered.
Highly layoff prone mainly due to poor acquisitions: Sanyo and Catalyst. Companies acquired lose money like it is going out of style and this ultimately hurts the core business. Layoffs, multiple furloughs in a calendar year (supplemented by vacation if you have some left).
Many of the former Motorola employees are grandfathered in positions for the sake of the Good Ole Boy network while lacking a formal education as well as ambition.
Many individual contributors and executive management have left to go to competitors who offer a stable environment, benefits, strong team dynamics, pay and strategic vision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When developing a strategic plan, make sure it a long term plan that does not change every 6 months. This kills product portfolios and hurts morale for those who put in the effort to drive those same portfolios to be a success.
Make the hard decisions to remove employees who do not have the necessary skill set. No one likes to fire people; however, those who lack the required engineering background and/or do not care are a drag on those employees who do.
Place a moratorium on acquisitions. It is outrageous to find out a couple of years into an acquisition that they are losing money and pull the company down overall. Who is minding the ship?

I have been working at ON Semiconductor

    Pros

Well managed. Clear vision. Good growth (acquisitions). Value driver is operational excellence.

    Cons

Company runs quite lean... no frills, weak succession planning. Product portfolio is sturdy, but "me too"... not leading edge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't lose site of fundamentals as the company grows.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to do your 3 first years. Lot of diversity/access in simple products.

    Cons

No organic growth, no corporate strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

ON Semiconductor has know a great development since it's creation but now the technologies and markets are evolving. The company needs a vision to keep the pace of the semiconductor industry, a consistent strategy of investment for long term. Everything is short sighted.

I worked at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good Engineering Team
Lot to learn, and lot to do
A good chance to work on different types of projects

    Cons

Bad managers with very less technical inclination
Projects fail all the time but nothing is done to change, or do things differently
A failure never results in better practices, or a change in methodology.
    Top management too conservative
Pay is probably the lowest in the industry

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A tech company should be run like one.
