Former Employee - Analog IC Design Engineer

    Pros

Interesting variety of work, good people, good work life balance, some opportunities for professional technical training.

    Cons

I was part of the former AMI, and after the acquisition, a lot of the performance incentives and training programs were cut or downgraded. Very disappointed by mandatory time off without pay (2 weeks/quarter). Later changed to mandatory vacation (with pay), but saved vacation only lasts so long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward top performers rather than (effectively) cutting salaries across the board. Morale plummets, and you lose your best people.

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Good compensation, ok benefits, flexible time schedule, lot of acquisition happening to come out with a right product mix to place itself as a real IC design company.

    Cons

Company stock value is vey low.
    Weak middle level management.
    Remnants of sluggish Motorola attitude.
    Not aggressive enough to succeed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Identify and Value your key people.
Compensation is not fairly distributed. Higher management takes the lion share.
Make the attitude of middle level management more aggressive and positive to succeed.

ON Semiconductor - ex-employee - not by choice

    Pros

Well-run. Company was in dire straights and deeply leveraged following Y2000 spin-off from Motorola Semiconductor. After CEO change, addition of new CFO, the company has not only become profitable, but well-positioned to grow. Senior management has leveraged core competencies in high volume commodities manufacturing into a money-making machine. They are not looking back.

    Cons

ON frequently acquires complementary companies. Because of redundancies from the acquisitions, there was a lot of concern about maintaining employment. Terminations are usually very unexpected and swift. There seems to be a lot of survivor syndrome. I'm not sure any of that is different from any other companies, these days, though. Stock prices seemed to fluctuate more than the general market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, even as a terminated employee, I cannot help but admire the way the management has made the hard decisions necessary to keep the company viable. It may not affect the bottom line, but it would be nice to keep the employees more informed. Especially during bad times, they are quite aware that cuts may be required, but it is gut-wrenching to see good people go. In the case of senior employees with good work records, it would be nice to reward their loyalty with an opportunity to seek another position within the company before outright termination. Again, to be fair, I'm not sure this is any different than any other company these days.
